Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just wondering how everyone is doing with their plans for summer learning??? Mine have really been put by the wayside as everyone has been keeping themselves busy with their own pursuits and interests...very unschoolingish. The 3 older went to a basketball camp and have been spending hours every day since playing basketball. They also attend a summer rec program each day with other kids from our town doing things like kickball, bike rides, tie dying, mini golf, etc. Everyone is attending various library programs as well and play the piano as they feel like it. Aside from that I see them spending time watching ants carry off beetles, monitor the garden and strawberries and help with the weeding and watering, build forts, color and paint, notice the birds they learned in the spring, reading, and so on and so on. And so I am pleased, very much. They are learning naturally which is what I always wanted. Maybe they'll be interest ed in delving into the things I prepared later in the summer. We'll see.

I did put together a special "writing box" which is a velvet covered box with some special stationery, stickers, pens, and an example of proper letter form taped to the inside cover. I wanted to encourage them to write letters this summer to anyone from Grandma, to sports players, to spiderman...just to write. It sits patiently on a shelf and was used once this week by my 8 year old who wrote to Bubbilicious Bubble Gum.

To be honest, I didn't plan any lessons. That's not to say that I didn't plan anything for summer. I posted about our plans for this summer here. There will be lots of reading (my girls like to read, esp. when they choose the book), a Catholic VBS, trips to see family, time with friends, some teatimes, Christmas gift-making and hopefully some nature exploring (although I personally enjoy that more when it's not 90 degrees outside ). Summer is the perfect time for us to take an unschooling approach to learning.
