Breaking off from this topic, debt-free college degree, I'd like to learn more about scholarships and contests. Off and on for the last two years, dd and I have tried to look into college scholarships and contests, only to give up and announce that "we'll get to it later." So much of the online stuff looks like at best, a waste of time and at worst, a scam. Has anyone had any success sifting through this stuff? Are their any resources that you like? I'm considering buying this book, The Scholarship & Financial Aid Solution: How to Go to College for Next to Nothing with Short Cuts, Tricks, and Tips from Start to Finish.
Love,

Consider registering with Fast Web. It's free and a very comprehensive collection of scholarships and awards. When you register, you provide information about the prospective student to help the database sort if she would qualify to apply for various financial scholarships. Then you receive email updates when there is information about a scholarship she might qualify for. The college counselors at the high schools caution against ever paying a service to "find money" for you. The info is out there free and available.
I haven't seen that particular book - can you get it from the library? (need cheapskate emoticon).

Thanks, Mary. Devin had been receiving Fas Web emails but they were getting lost in the shuffle of her life . We've decided to turn applying for scholarships and contests into her summer part-time job. As we speak, she is figuring out how much time to put into it and how much money she would hope to make. I'll donate some time weekly to help her get organized, edit her applications, etc.
Thanks also for helping me to hold onto my pennies! Unfortunately, the book isn't at the library. It is a relatively new book...I'll call the library and see if they plan to order it.
Devin did pick up this book, The Scholarship Scouting Report at the library. I'll keep you all posted!
Love,

I have a sibling getting a free Master's from Notre Dame through this program. He spends 3 summers in classes at South Bend and 2 school years working at a Catholic school in need.
I was able to get a scholarship from the state my last three semesters of college. It required that I teach in the state for two years (Catholic school counted).

The Catholic high school where my sons have attended (and Mary G.'s husband taught) have had ACE teachers for the past 3 years so we have directly benefited from this program in that regard. They are phenomenal - one in particular who was here '05-'07 years was a wonderful influence on my sons!

This all gets my brain churning...it seems to me that one part of this process is to *look and pray for* unique opportunities and not just assume that we will walk down the usual path of higher education. So hopeful!
