Hi Ladies!
I'm looking for a simple advent wreath to purchase. Unfortunately I'm not sure where to look! Where have you all purchased advent wreaths and are there any books you would recommend for the Advent season?
What about Jesse trees? Is there such thing as an already prepared Jesse tree kit? What are some of your traditions for the Advent time of year?

Autom has a large selection of Advent wreaths - from home ones to the ones they sell to parishes - many are just the candle holder. You would need to get the evergreens to circle around them. Advent wreaths are really easy to make also. Just need a floral styrofoam ring and insert evergreen branches into it along with the candles.
Several Catholic websites and homeschool companies sell the Jesse Tree Kit by Lynn M. Simms and Betsy Walker. Our Father's House carries a couple different kits.
This stamp set could also be used to make very easy Jesse Tree ornaments.
Both of these 4 Real threads have ideas for Advent:
Resources for Celebrating Liturgical Year
Advent planning

Information overload here...but I'm reviewing my materials to help out my sister for the homeschooler's Advent retreat, so I have this fresh in my mind...and I'm trying to figure out the same thing for myself!
Advent Wreaths
Leaflet Missal Company and Printery House and The Catholic Shop come to mind. I like the simple brass Advent wreath and add either artificial or real roping or garland around the wreath, add purple ribbon and you have your own customized wreath.
And btw, I think it was Kelly's comment. My mother never suspended our wreath directly from the ceiling, but attached the ribbons to the chandelier, so it hung from the chandelier/light suspended above the table. That keeps it off the table and in the center.
I'm always in pursuit of better candles. I've been able to find beeswax tapers or better type of tapers in the purple and pink, but now my supply is gone and I can't find them anywhere. Anyone have good sources for this? I just don't like the typical ones they sell with these kits.
For Jesse Tree ideas:
I have tried multiple sources. I really don't like the one that MaryM suggested (sorry Mary!). I really love the stuff from Illuminated Ink although this set only has 12 symbols. I like to have a symbol for each day in Advent minus 7 to include the O Antiphons.
Some other options I have seen:
Our Father's House has some great kits. I have the cross stitch one and the paper...the Liquache looks great. But it's a kit, not ready-made.
Some years ago Abbey Press had some ready-made punch out and hang colorful Jesse Tree ornaments along with a Jesse Tree Activity Booklet by Carolyn Altstadt. I don't see it in their catalog, but keep an eye out on eBay for some cast-offs.
I have a book called The Jesse Tree by Raymond and Georgene Anderson, printed by Fortress Press. It's a simple booklet, with each page having an ornament and on the back the description, verse and prayers.
I don't have this one, but it looks really good. But it's a kit: Let's Make a Jesse Tree by Darcy James.
Finally, some ideas with pictures or symbols and instructions on Jesse Tree ornaments, although not ready made:
Domestic Church's Jesse Tree. They also have a great book which includes this and more Advent, Christmas and Epiphany and also a Jesse Tree Stamp Kit on this page.
Does anyone have The Advent-Christmas Book? I'm wondering if it has Jesse Tree ornaments included. There was an earlier book by the same title but different author: Living and Celebrating the Advent-Christmas Seasons by Mary Lewis. I have two editions, but both have some line drawings of Jesse Tree ornaments.
I also have Advent Arts and Christmas Crafts that have some good versions of Jesse Tree ornaments to make. They seem loosely based on an old kit printed by Liturgical Press in the 1970s, called Twelve Days of Christmas Kit. I grew up on that kit...and we made dough ornaments based on the designs in this kit. These are the symbols included in the kit.
Catholic Culture's contribution:Jesse Tree Instructions...this illustration includes the ornaments from that kit.
Jesse Tree
Jesse Tree Ornament Ideas and Blessing from Mary Reed Newland's Year and Our Children.
And finally, The Holy Needle sells some embroidered Jesse Tree ornaments.
I was also thinking of painting the symbols on glass balls (or plastic balls made to look like glass) with acrylic paint...but the Sculpey idea is really appealing.

No problem, I only listed it as it is the one that seems to be most available everywhere. I've not personally seen or used it, since we did our own with the Sculpey. I'm still working on borrowing a digital camera - then I can take pictures to post for you.
I just got the Leaflet Missal catalogue this afternoon (Jenn menioned it for wreaths). They have a felt Jesse Tree banner that looks nice (but would also be pretty easy to make yourself). Speaking of felt, Leaflet also carries a felt Advent wreath. I made one similar (it's on a banner though instead of self-standing) many years ago before I'd ever seen them for sale. The velcro flames are a big hit with little ones who are too small to light candles. I've made them as gifts for godchildren through the years.

Coyote Found Candles have beautiful tapers in a huge variety of colors. They are great quality candles. Most of the health food stores around here carry their products. Just an FYI, they are pretty "mother-earthy" company and have things like goddess candles and such so you'll see those on the website.
If you are feeling adventurous you may want to make your own. Dipped candles really aren't that difficult to do and the quality is really nice as you can select your choice of wax. HearthSong carried a kit for making dipped beeswax tapers, but I'm not seeing it on their on-line catalog. It was really easy for a beginner to use and got us into candlemaking. I've got resources for candlemaking if you're interested in that route.

Oh, I so want to do candlemaking, but then I look around me and know that dh wouldn't understand taking on a new project when I have everything else waiting to be done here. I have been a wishful candlemaker. I have been reading books and have several here for "that some day". I'd love some web sources and some cheap supplies for melting wax and dipping pots. That's the other part that intimidates me...buying the supplies that I may not ever use again.
Maybe we should start another candlemaking thread to make Elizabeth happy?

We made our own Jesse ornaments as well - but were helped getting started by some sample symbols of various prophets, etc. It was just a one page thing and any kit would probably have them. We also made the O Antiphons to be hung on our tree on the appropriate day. We went all out one year and read the events from the Bible and then let the children run. We made a dove carved out of soap, used clay to form some, used popsicle sticks and construction paper to make the sling of David and used construction paper, popsicle sticks and toothpicks to make the harp, etc. We save them in a special box and add to them every year. Some of them are really quite good (IMHO) and some are the precious treasures only a mom could appreciate.
One thing that has helped us is that we use these to decorate our bare tree (and have even resorted to using lights on the tree to represent creation and then the angel at the very top is put on at the very end just before Christmas. We do it all a tiny bit at a time all throughout Advent, but this then becomes the basis of our Christmas tree - we add the shiny balls and some very special ornaments that include the baby Jesus, etc. and we don't have to take down one thing and set up another. It's not quite perfectly traditional but it helps us stop and slow down.

This is exactly what my mother wanted to do...incorporate the Jesse Tree in our Christmas tree, starting bare until Christmas comes. I love it!

For Advent wreaths --
St. Gabriel's Book Nook has loads of stuff on sale for 70% off, including several Advent wreaths. There's a $35 minimum purchase for the 70%-off items, but there are jewels to be mined there ....

Does anyone decorate 2 separate trees-one Jesse and one Christmas?
Just curious...

I keep changing what we do. Last year, I used a second, smaller, artificial tree as our Jesse Tree. We used white lights, added the ornaments throughout Advent, then left it up through the Christmas season.

I am sooo excited!!!! Ladies I found an Advent Wreath that incorporates the symbols of the Jesse Tree!!! What a terrific combination! It's a pretty wreath too where you could easily include some greenery for added decoration. Here's the link: http://www.catholiccompany.com/product_detail.cfm?ID=6943. I'm still going through all the other suggestions you all listed. You all are a treasure trove of information!! THank you so much!
Blessings to you, Ana B. WIFE to Jeff, and Mamma to 4 blessings!

I don't right now, but my mother did and does. We had a small 2-3 foot artificial tree that was our Jesse Tree. Then the Christmas tree was a separate entity.

MaryM,
Maybe you could post your Advent saints symbols idea that you shared on CCM last year here? I just love this idea...With the Jesse Tree we have the prefigurement of Christ and Old Testament longing of his coming...and incorporating the saints symbols shows people with the OT fulfilled and living the Gospel.

Does anyone have this book?
Would it be good for a family with teens and an 11yod? or is it preschool on nature?
Thanks

Preschool IN nature, not on.
This spelling and typing thing gets me, even if I preview.

Yes, I have it. I think the age range is quite broad. It's family oriented, with family celebrations, projects from the very simple (coloring pages) to more complicated (cross-stitch, candles, baking, etc.). Some of these project *I* would do myself, so a teen might be inspired. In my family we had age span of 15 years. If it was a family project, the teens would help plan, organize, decorate and bake for the family event....helping the parents' role.
