Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Devin and I are considering designing an inter-discipline course of study to encompass weather, natural disasters, and their aftermath. Will you help us brainstorm? Please share any resources that you have found helpful.

Science - weather, how extreme weather develops, detection

History - how natural disasters have impacted cultures throughout history,

Government - how governments handle with natural disasters (prevention, aftermath), international cooperation (and lack thereof)

Econmics - financial impact

Psychology - collective/individual loss, grief, PTSD,

Literature/Cinema - classic titles, fiction and non-fiction, that include natural disasters

Thank you!

Angie, did you ever find suggestions? I found this looking for something else. I have a book called "Sent to Earth: God and the Return of Ancient Disasters" by Michael H. Brown

I think there's a lot of speculation in it.. but I thought it might be a good resource since it mentions historical events.. natural disasters and some of the effects they had on society and history.

You'd definately want to preview it.. it's not written for children.. so you'd need to know it to decide if it would be ok for your older children or not.. or if you'd want to just read excerpts or if you'd just want to use it to find other sources for the events or if you'd want to pitch it in the trash

I like it because it makes me think (and gives me things to think over) not because I think he's 100% correct.

And I don't think I read this the first time around either.

Math - There is some pretty interesting math when you look at scales (Beaufort, Richter) - how those were developed and how they increase in degree when determining the severity, extremes of temperature, lots of graphs of weather and natural disasters that can be analyzed.
