We are looking at only CA or OR colleges or Universities for my oldest......she will be transferring there as a junior. We are PRAYING for a full scholarship........and she can only go to these two states with the scholarship.
What school did you or your spouse (or other) attend........what can you say about it? Do you recommend? Recommend to avoid? And why?
She would be a double major: English Literature and Theatre Education.
Thanks for your help! God bless our teens as they discern (this a teen for only 5 more months  )

CA - Humboldt State
positives are it's a smallish univ. in a smallish town.. I could actually KNOW my professors.
don't know much about the english or theatre dept though I did take some excellent theatre classes there.
Probably all the same stuff you'd find at any of them in regards to dating and partying etc.

CA - UCLA. I loved it. Don't know if they have a Theater Education department. Their English department was great when I went there (they tried to recruit me, LOL!). Dh went there, too.
Yes, it is huge. No, that's no obstacle. Just sit in the first 4 rows of a big lecture hall - but, as a junior, your dd won't be encountering too many mega-lecture classes.
My brother went to UC Santa Barbara - his one and only choice - and liked it a lot. Don't know about English/Theater there because he didn't take any English he didn't have to. It has a rep as a party school, but it's totally possible to avoid that scene.

How funny---I was a Theater Arts Major and my husband was an English Major at Santa Clara.
Both departments were beyond excellent with life-changing profs for both of us..
I was a nominal Catholic and my husband in a cocky /bull-headed kind of stage  so the lack of orthodoxy at the time didn't really throw us off. He was editor at the Lit. Magazine and wrote (controversial) articles for the newspaper. He thrives on challenging the status quo, so it didn't intimidate him that he was attacked by some for his conservativism. He was certainly respected by others, I'm sure.
I actually loved my Theology classes/profs, and hadn't had much, so I found it all fascinating. Looking back, I can see that it was quite shaky in some ways and definitely could have been disconcerting for a well-formed orthodox homeschooled Catholic.....but maybe not. I think some students thrive/love wrestling over the issues---- a lot has to do with temperament and talents---I know my husband benefited from it.
I'm not sure how things stand currently in the departments----I'm quite out of touch. Academically it was abs. outstanding and is a heavenly campus. We were married at Mission Santa Clara. 
I hope this was a fair evaluation and helps....

Nina.....the one day we stopped by to see the mission.......we could only peek in because there was a wedding going on!

UCLA and loved it. Came from a small catholic school, but still loved it ...because I was a music major. Theatre and music departments are small and that made it nice!

My school was tiny, too, Marianne. My first-ever UCLA lecture was in Haynes 39 - 400+ students! I loved it. My major was econ-business (huge), but I made lots of friends and learned a great deal.

hey jodielyn, i went to humboldt state too~it is such a little niche here, i was surprised to see that you were here.
i have two friends actually that majored in theater here, and have gone off to receive masters of theater arts elsewhere. we do live in a beautiful, creative place.

I went to San Jose State for my undergrad and UC Davis for my graduate work--both in English (English, Humanities, and Art History at SJSU and English at UCD). I graduated from both within the last five years, so my experiences there are fairly recent.
Both have very good English departments. I forged many solid relationships with my professors--there are hard-working, engaging, encouraging professors at both schools. I did several semesters of independent study and even presented at grad-level conferences as an undergrad, thanks to the encouragement of my professors. Some of them were really fabulous.
Obviously, there are liberal professors at both schools too; both departments definitely leaned liberal overall. But that will unfortunately be the case in nearly every English department in the state. It is pretty easy to figure out which teachers to avoid... .

Wow, Nancy...maybe we passed each other on campus!
UCLA did have a theater department when I was there 20+ years ago and a Catholic group that went to mass on Sunday.
Most of the classes were small except for the usual undergraduate
requirements. I remember the theater department being small also.
I'm sure so much has changed since then:)
college was cheap back then. I had 7 courses costing only $385.00 per trimester!!!
Their motion picture/film department was really cool...thought of switching over. I think it is motion picture/film dept. is part of the theater dept. too. I had friends that went on to do very nicely with internships at MGM Studios.

I'm a San Jose State Alumni with a degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in humanites and history minor.
I had one PHENOMENAL history teacher but considering I graduated many moons ago (where's the gray-haired, bifocal wearing emoticon? ), I doubt he's still there.
I don't recall any outstanding profs in English there - I was just really getting into my faith then and wrote alot about saints and Christian themes - I did get lower grades in one class because of it -
However, the good thing about SJSU, was that I lived at home, commuted and I worked...
Not necessarily bad things, iykwim???

I went to Sac State (prior to transferring), I was English and Theatre. It is a huge school, I would not recommend it.
My BIL went to USF and some friends here as well. I hear great things about it, of course that was many moons ago, when Fr. Fessio was still there.
Oops, I just realized you were asking about SFU not USF, sorry no help there.

USF, is the one I have heard good thing about. They have the Ignatius institute there.

Since it's been all CA schools so far:
My husband went to University of Oregon. I know he liked it and has good memories. He was a Computer Science then Social Science major so can't help with English Lit./Theater. His complaints would be big lecture classes for core and intro classes, lots of classes taught by grad students (and lots of international ones in CS and he had trouble understanding - part of reason he dropped that as a major). It is liberal (surprise, surprise ) and Eugene is a really granola city. It is a physically very beautiful part of Oregon - but lots of gray days and wet.
I had assumed you couldn't consider private U.'s but you mentioned USF, so I guess you can? I know a bit about U. of Portland as well if that is a possibilty.

The scholarship includes any private or public schools that allow her to transfer as a junior.

By dad, mom, sister and brother went to USF ... and my sister worked at USF until her accident a couple of years ago ... it doesn't have the Ignatius Institute which is one of the reasons Fr. Fessio left (Fr. Fessio then started Campion College which has since closed).
USF would be hard to consider Catholic in many ways ... and it's pretty darn liberal
