We've used and liked Apologia's Chemistry course. Unlike some of the stuff in that company's Biology curriculum, there are no *hot spots* that I found. You can buy the lab kit that has the glassware and such. The labs are very doable at home, as they use household cleaning products as the sources of the chemicals (doesn't that make you feel secure? ).

We read the Camelot Chem Primer like a story. We did some of the problem sets, and added chem kits from Science Kit. On the very good advice of the chair of biochem at a prestigious medical school, we did little quantitative chemistry, but read plenty of living books, did some qualitative demonstrations, and some chemical equation balancing on paper. The result? Libby loves chem, and I developed a fresh love for the subject. Libby is looking forward to taking chemistry electives in college, if she can fit them into her schedule.

My daughter just finished a Chemistry Class using Agologia with a co-op. She did poorly and now has a distaste for the whole subject. I would like to go over Chemistry again this summer with her, and she is willing.

I am interested in the book your mentioned--Camelot Chem Primer. Could you tell me the living books you read and also is Science Kit the name of the company you ordered the chem kits from?

I feel bad that she had such a bad experience with this subject an would love for her to develop a new love for the subject.

Science Kits has some nice, easy, and safe chem demonstrations that are guaranteed to impress.

Living chem books include Faraday's Chemical History of a Candle, The 13th Element, Dorothy Sayers mystery novel Strong Poison, The Joy of Chemistry, and more...others are listed on my chem page.

Is this the site for The Teaching Company? I'm not seeing a sale on Chemistry, but there are many other science courses on sale. Am I missing something?

And MacBeth, is this a company you would universally recommend (if I even linked the right company, that is)? I know there have to be some objectional religion and history and even science courses just because they have to appeal to a wide audience ... but if we carefully choose from among the particular subjects, is *whatever* we choose going to be good?

Tina, I have not listened to/watched all their products, but many are quite good, including the lectures on Augustine (high school and older), China (ditto), and science. I am still working through the calculus video, but so far, it's wonderful.

My oldest, just going into 9th grade, is an auditory learner. That poor child's whole learning was a huge frustration for both of us until I figured this out about him. Hmmm ... this earth science course is awfully tempting. It's something he and his 12 yo sister and OK, I, are interested in. That makes an enormous difference with him.

We were planning on starting earth science in September anyway. I just wonder whether he has the maturity to take in all that this course has to offer ...

And then I must ask, do you ask for written work, have them take notes? Do you buy the transcripts?

This and some of these. I see that two things have happened since I last placed an order. Some things are no longer available at SK, but are available from other retailers, and, more aggravating, some items are no longer available for shipping to homeschools. Let me see if I can find alternative suppliers or another way to deal with this problem. For the most part, we are ordering such small amounts that there should not be a problem.
