Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Take the challenge! Try your hand at the using the search engine and see if you can find answers to these questions. I'll have to figure out where I'm going to post the answers. And if any of these are you – you have an unfair advantage and can’t give it away! If you are having trouble say so - I'll try to provide some hints that hopefully will help you think of ways to alter your searches when you aren't getting results.

-What picture book did Rachel May suggested for lessons on segregation and friendship?
-Who owns the Noritake Chandon china pattern?
-Who visits volcanoes using Google Earth?
-Whose husband did Maryan have as a student in her highschool English class?
-Which musician was the "Composer of the Month" for the May 2006 study?
-Who held an Insect Mini Day Camp last summer?
-Who has a Vera Bradley backpack with pink elephant pattern?
-Who suggested a fun craft for the Transfiguration?
-What percentage of 4 Real members have met more than 10 other members in real life?
-What is a game you could play for Mary's Birthday?
-Who suggested a tater tot hotdish as an easy dinner recipe?
-Which two members suggested jewel weed for poison ivy?
-Which member has used Life of Fred Calculus?
-How many teaspoons of fresh grated ginger are in Ruth’s lamb curry recipe?
-Where can you find a Saint Lucia paper doll?
-Who shared a funny story about her child who confused a missal with a torpedo?
-Which new member (joined 2008) has kindergartener triplets?

Feel free to add your own challenge questions (but you have to make sure it is searchable and findable.)

I think I have the answer to the first one!

Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles, illustrated by Jerome Lagarrigue

That is all I have time to search for today. Probably when I come back to this later tonight all the answers will be given. Fun!

Ok, I thought I'd try to learn something about searching and the computer. Here is what I did:

I searched for Life of Fred Calculus by any word, by exact words and by phrase. One came up with 829 hits, the other came up with none and the last came up with just this post.

I changed whether I searched for all forums or just living and loving numbers. I also changed whether or not it was message body or subject title.

So everything else came up with nothing found.

I guess I could search for Life of Fred by phrase and see if that helped. Other than that what should I do?

OK, I did the above search and came up with a reasonable number of hits. It looks like Anne Marie in NM used it for Calculus at least some. Mary G and MacBeth, at the time of post, were just beginning the Calculus with theirs or looking into it.

Oh Janet - I'm so sorry you decided to start with that one. It was one of the trickier ones and I included it for that reason (I was having problems myself and had to figure out why ). So this is a case where sometimes less is better than more when it comes to search terms.

We have to remember that when people post they generally aren't thinking "Am I using the best wording and terms to help others with a search of old threads in the future?" So people often use abbreviations, may only use one of the words in the subject topic and the other words in the message body (so they never occur together). A little of both is what is happening with this thread that I was trying to encourage you all to find.

Hopefully it is a fairly safe bet that any meaty calculus discussions are in the math forum (though the word may appear in other locations) so I would first focus searches on the math forum only.

So if you search only "Calculus" in Living and Loving Numbers you get 18 results (manageable to read through).

If you search "Fred Calculus" as "all words" in Living and Loving Numbers you only get one hit and it's the thread I was hoping for. Life of Fred math books?

A look at why: In that thread "Life of Fred Calculus" is never used together in any posts. Life of Fred Calc. is used, but wouldn't come up because Calculus is still one of the search terms you requested. LOF calculus is also a phrase but one would have to consider searching by abbreviation to get that one.

By "any word" is when you got the 829 hits (mostly because "of" is a VERY common word in posts) I avoid using articles and short prepositions for that reason unless I'm searching "by phrase." Explanation above for why it wasn't coming up in "all words" or "phrase."

Good choices in general for searches - only problem with this one is that the search terms weren't going to work together regardless of which forum you chose.

If you would have searched just "Life of Fred" like you mentioned as a phrase you would have gotten considerably fewer hits (looks like 11) but would still have to read through all to find if there were refereneces to Calculus.

Okay, now I feel like a total search engine geek anybody else thinking that about me?

Yes!! She loves the internet, or so she says.

So, you all are doing great! Is this helping anyone practice new skills or are the search pros having all the fun? We are going to be done with these questions soon, so like I said feel free to add hunts of your own for us.

And a few hints:
MaryM wrote:
-Which musician was the "Composer of the Month" for the May 2006 study?

Think stickies in some of the threads - they can be a big help in finding things as we try to archive info there.

MaryM wrote:
-Who held an Insect Mini Day Camp last summer?

Consider other words for insect.

MaryM wrote:
-How many teaspoons of fresh grated ginger are in Ruth’s lamb curry recipe?

This one is easy - I'm surprised no one has tried it.

MaryM wrote:
--Which new member (joined 2008) has kindergartener triplets?

Where do we learn about most new members?
