*** UPDATE: Thanks to Elizabeth for contacting the company, the owner left a message on my machine on Friday that she arranged to have our book sent from the stock at St George's. It arrived today. She was very polite and apologetic on the machine and offered a gift certificate in the future as an apology for the trouble. Thanks again, Elizabeth!

I have had the same experience with this company. They did send my order, but it took a long time to receive it. Karen

I haven't ordered from them in a few years...I don't remember having an issue with them....but I just don't remember. That does seem like a very long time though!

They moved from MN to Florida so I am not sure the info on their site is correct. I am not sure if they are re-opening a store there or not. Maybe someone else can clarify?

By Way of the Family has left MN and moved to Florida. Their St. Paul phone number has been discontected but the recording says calls are being accepted at the following phone number:
239-348-1437
Hope this helps.

I haven't ordered from them in a few years, either, but I remember they were so slow to ship the book I ordered that I had to call them. Eventually, I did receive the book, but I was sufficiently put off to never order from them again. Now, I just use either Emmanuel Books, CHC, or Adoremus Books most of the time.

Thank you, Waverley! I called the above number and was told that it's not in stock, but it should come back in stock sometime, and at that point they'll mail it to me. They're checking when that will be, and will get back to me. If it's going to be a while, I'll ask them to cancel so I can order it from somewhere else, I think.
It would have been nice had they emailed to let me know it was back ordered, but they're obviously busy with moving and such. Perhaps a warning on the website that, because of the move they may not be very communicative would be in order? Three and a half weeks seems a bit of a long time to be incommunicado on an order. I'll be sure to remember for the future to order from them only if I don't need it in a terrible hurry.

I've ordered from them for several years and I've never had a problem. Granted, I live 100 miles from them, but they have always been wonderful to deal with.
In fact, I just ordered Treasure Box books from them on April 22 and received them on April 29. I'm betting that it is just because of the move.

I think the move has something to do with it. By Way of the Family is the publisher of Real Learning.

I've ordered from them several times and not had any delays or other troubles. I have known Chelsea online for several years and I think if the business is slow in answering right now it's probably from moving glitches.

UPDATE:
Well, they didn't call as they said they would. I waited Wednesday and Thursday for their call, so I had to call them *again* (long distance! Ack!) this evening.
I gave them almost a month. I emailed three times. I've now called *them* twice and they just don't respond. I just wanted to know if by order would be sent soon or not, so that I could decide to continue to wait or cancel and order somewhere else.
I'm kind of disappointed. Other people have gotten their orders, so they obviously are working despite their move, I can't imagine why they just won't communicate with me. A simple email at some point along the way would have been just fine! :)
I guess it's because I ordered one little syllabus and not a great big order. :(
I didn't mind waiting the month, but now I really do need the book. :(
Live and learn, I guess!

Lauri, I wrote to Chelsea, who owns By Way of the Family. If you can PM me with your contact information, she'll give you a call tomorrow. She writes, also:
Chelsea wrote:
Our new website will be up within the month. It will be awesome. We've been working on it for months now. We have thousands of new items in stock that we never carried before including toys and religious gifts and our new software integrates our retail store with our mail order catalog and our website with live inventory and automated credit card processing and shipping and best of all--order tracking.
Our phone # is 800-588-2589--same as always. Our local # has changed. We've had static in our lines and some phone problems on and off due to all the new construction. A technician is coming out tomorrow.
Thanks for passing this on to me. I'll look into it first thing in the morning. |

Thank you, Elizabeth. I never saw the 800 number on the website. My fault entirely! I'll have to look much better! I clicked the "contact us" which led to an email and emailed on three separate occasions, as I said, and I clicked the "store location" information and it was the old location and old phone number. Waverly so kindly sought out the new phone number for me in an above post - I'm not sure where she got it.
The woman I spoke with on Tuesday (two women, actually) took my order number, name and phone number. I left all my info with them again on Thursday on their machine. But I will PM you all my info, too, if it'll help to have an insider doing it! :) LOL! You're very kind to pull strings over such a small order!! (Which is why I think my order, emails and phone calls went repeatedly unattended to.)

I'm so bummed that they aren't in St. Paul. We're headed there in a couple weeks and they were on our list of stops. Since dh is not usually able to go to hs conferences I thought it would be like taking him to a curriculum fair. Oh, well.

SusanJ,
You might have your curriculum fair opportunity yet!
By Way of the Family in St. Paul, MN was purchased by St. George's Catholic Books & Gifts located in Blaine, a suburb of St. Paul. They have a full selection of Catholic religious gifts as well as the homeschool materials formerly carried by By Way of the Family's local retail store. Their address is:
1250 126th Ave. NE
Blaine, MN 55434
and they are open Monday - Saturday 9 - 5.
They will also be taking By Way of the Family's large vendor space at the MN Catholic Homeschool Conference in June.

Thanks for that info, Elizabeth. We'll try to stop in on our trip this summer.

Thanks so much for the info on St. George's!!!! I was just speaking with several other homeschooling moms here in MN who were disappointed that there wasn't a homeschooling store where we could look at resources before we purchased them. I'll tell everyone about St. George's.
