I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this ...
Homeschooling in California is undergoing a serious, serious attack right now: http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/CA/default.asp
Please sign the petition to help limit the damage of this ruling.
The ruling at the state appellate court was that only parents who are credentialed can homeschool.

The court decision seems harsh!!!!
Do you know if you have to be a Calif. homeschooler in order to sign the petition? Prayers to all of you in California!

It's a good show of solidarity, I think, for people who aren't in California to sign it ... so thank you for signing it. Don't forget to get your DHs to sign it, too.
Thank God that the law has not changed, though the interpretation has. One hopes and prays that this will not be widespread.
I'm so shocked by it. I thought Cali. was pretty relaxed about hs-ing, but I should have seen it coming with the intense amount of advertising and pressure to do mandatory preschool.
It almost feels like this judge was just waiting to find a scapegoat, so he chose a family that has been riddled by charges of abuse and neglect who happens to homeschool. Whatever the problems this family has, and I pray that the children can be safe and the parents learn from all this, it is no reason to penalize all homeschoolers in the state.
Please start novenas, entreat your favorite saints, etc. to let us have our homeschooling right protected here in California.

Just a reminder that homeschooling has never been legal in California. Homeschoolers operate under the private school laws, which means they either have to file a private school affadavit or register with an umbrella school. I don't think they could really stomp that out at this point, though of course the way to make sure of that is to be active and vigilant in defense of our right to school the way we think is best for our children.
Harassment of homeschoolers isn't new here in CA either, as you can see from this article from 2000.

Is there a way to combine the two threads on this topic? I don't know if there is some "moderator magic" that can do that?

I signed it! It seems rather harsh and presumptuous for one judge or court to make a decision that will affect so meny people. I know it happens all the time, but this just seems out of line! I would hate for other states to follow suit. Very scary!
Blessings,
Betsie

Please, if you can, listen to the podcast on "In Defense of Homeschooling" from Dr. James Dobson/Focus on the Family. I heard it through the www.oneplace.com website. Or you can find it on FOCUS ON THE FAMILY website.
Also, listen to Al Kresta from Ave Maria Radio (which you can get through the EWTN website). Just a few days ago, he got minimal information on his talk show regarding this legal matter, and he seemed extremely disturbed by the nature of this newest homeschooling matter.
Homeschooling may become illegal not only in California but all the US states IF we don't hurry and do something-- especially pray, pray, pray! And sign the HSLDA or find a place on James Dobson's website to sign the petition! Please take this very, very seriously!

I haved been avoiding the news lately and only heard that homeschooling is now illegal in California. I've read a few articles but still don't understand what is going on here? Is this only about that one family and is there some underlying issue (like abuse, etc) that I am not seeing? I also had no idea the types of things the schools are doing out there! Wow, God have mercy on us!

Yes, it was a case of
child abuse.
The Superintendent of Schools in California has assured homeschoolers that their status hasn't changed and that they should not worry.
I think it's good that we are being active in getting the ruling depublished (I think that's the word)
I really don't think this ruling has anything much to do with universal preschool or any of the other political trends in our golden state. This was a surprise ruling by a local judge. It has taken everyone by surprise, including the governor and the superintendent, as you see.

Willa, were you reading my mind? I admit I didn't read up on any of the issues, just read the headlines, and saw that it wasn't illegal. But yesterday I bumped into someone who said hs is illegal in CA. I *thought* I heard differently, but I needed to go back and read a summary. Thanks!

The court is going to re-hear the case. Here is HSLDA's article about it.

I still don't get it - and how the following can be permitted.
To me this insinuates that if you are a "qualified teacher" thenno abuse would happen. Or that this gives an impression that teachers have some sort of immunity that parents don't have. This is dangerous.
Had to say it.
Praying for all of you in CA and the rest of the US - I am sure this will have repercussions on all of you.
Blessings
