I have a son that is going to be a high school junior next year. It is his dream to play hockey at Notre Dame. Since we live in southern Virginia it is unlikely this will happen if we keep doing what we are doing as hockey is not a big sport here. He has been looking at options to improve the chances of making that dream come true and has found a school in Ohio called Walsh Jesuit. He and his dad are spending this week meeting with the hockey coach and he is visiting classes. I was wondering if anyone else that has had a child join high school in the middle has any advice.

I can't help you here, as I am going to bringing my child home from school.
Good luck to your son, that is wonderful that your husband and him are able to go talk with coaches!
Good Luck To Your Family!!!

Hi Patty - how did the meeting go???
I haven't sent my children in the middle of the year, but the (all boys Catholic) school where my husband teaches quite often has someone join mid-year. I think it depends on the community of the school. Are the boys there open to new people? The fact that he will play a sport will automatically put him "in" a bit more than if he just showed up for classes.
Let us know how it went and if he will go?
God bless
Margot

Patty --
I can only speak from a classroom perspective: I taught many homeschoolers that entered jhs/hs school.
While everyone who enters a new school goes through transitions, homeschoolers have a few areas of transition that are particular to them. Areas that were tricky usually were notetaking, time management, and test taking. All of these are skills which you don't necessarily need to use when you're homeschooling. Writing notes *quickly* and taking tests *quickly* (meaning within the class time) in particular were the skills that they picked up within a few weeks of school.
Occasionally some individuals struggled with tests in the beginning, but I always encouraged them and told them that it was just a transition. By week 8, they were always doing well... and always a joy to have in class.
If you can work on those classroom skills ahead of time, it may help. Just my perspective...

Two of my brothers transitioned into and out of (military) boarding school during their highschool years. They never had any particular problems going in and retain fond memories of their boarding school experiences.
Good luck.

Thanks all of you for your words of wisdom and interest. Victor really enjoyed everything about the school except for the food. He was really impressed that they went to confession during their religion class that day. The school is not part of a parish and has it own church which my husband thought was interesting. It is very strong in academics and seems to take the fact that it is a Catholic school to heart. The coach liked Victor, but since it isn't hockey season anymore, he didn't get to seem him skate or play which is kind of important.
Maryan, I could see how those would be difficult areas for homeschoolers. Victor is pretty good about getting his work done quickly and I suppose I could start timing his tests. Did you have any ideas how to give him the opportunity to practice notetaking? I have had him rewrite things in his own words before (narration), but that isn't quite the same thing.

What about taking notes on the homily at Mass?
