Along the lines of MaryM's when you were a kid post, what was the first book you can remember reading?
I can remember mine was Maurice Sendak's Nutshell Library -- my favorite being "Pierre" (I was in trouble ALOT when I was little  ).
The first chapter book (with minimal pictures and boy wasn't I said about that!  ) was B is for Betsy -- I can still see the orange cover on the book I bought when Mom and I (just us, and when you're the 6th of 7, that's memorable!) went downtown on errands and I got to pick out a book to buy.
I've been buying them ever since!

The 1st 2 books I can remember reading are Mrs. Mike (can't remember the author) and Baby Island by Caroline Ryrie Brink of Caddie Woodlawn fame.

The first book... well I remember Mum reading Caspar the Friendly ghost to me, and I had to find him in the pictures.
Then the first book I bought was a Ladybird book of The Three Little Kittens.
The first book I READ myself (not in the ITA alphabet) was the Little Red Hen.
I don't recall the first chapter book. I advanced in reading quite fast, and we had weekly library trips (this was my ideal trip as a child ).
I DO remember picking up Pride and Prejudice and reading it at 8. I was very proud of myself reading 'A Grown Up Book' .
After that I read anything I could get my hands on... including reading the other kids at school, easy reader books upside down when I finished mine

Little Women. I read all of them, plus Little Men.

The first book I can ever remember reading was "The Golden Book of Fairy Tales", translated by Marie Ponsot and illustrated by Adrienne Segur. My original copy was a gift from my grandparents in the 50's and I long bemoaned the fact that it fell apart from constant use. The illustrations are gorgeous; imagine Jan Brett with an elegant twist. I discovered a reprint, copyright 1999, and have been able to introduce my children and grandchildren to a childhood favorite.
Two later memorable favorites; "Black Beauty", Junior Classic version, illustrated by Fritz Eichenberg, copyright 1945 and a Companion Library version of "Little Women", copyright 1963. Both are worn and falling apart at the seams...not unlike their owner ;)
We had very few books to share among six siblings, but those that we had were well-loved and cherished! My dear grandfather helped foster our love of books by telling us "Books are our friends". Most of my books resembled the Velveteen Rabbit...our friendships ran deep!
The Preface in my childhood copy of "Little Women", quotes from John Bunyan:
"Go then, my little Book, and show to all,
That entertain and bid thee welcome shall,
What thou dost keep close shut up in thy breast;
And wish what thou dost show them may be blest
To them for good, may make them choose to be
Pilgrims better, by far, than thee or me.
Tell them of Mercy; for she is one
Who early hath her pilgrimage begun.
Yea, let young damsels learn of her to prize
The world which is to come, and so be wise;
For little tripping maids may follow God
Along the ways which saintly feet have trod."
May the books we introduce to our children help them trip along ways which saintly feet have trod!

"Little House on the Prairie" - I was in 2nd grade and I told my teacher I had read it. She thought I meant my mom read it to me. After I insisted, I was allowed to go the "big library" in school, for grade 3 and up.

My mom says I learned to read when I was 4, and Santa brought me Margurite de Angeli's "Book of Nursery and Mother Goose Rhymes" for Christmas when I was 4-1/2. I remember reading that book...
The first chapter book I remember reading was "The Secret Garden" (illustrated by Tasha Tudor). I received it for a birthday present when I was 8 and read it after my swimming lessons, wrapped in a towel, on a blanket in the grass while my brother had his lessons.

The golden book of The Ugly Duckling. I was at my great aunt and uncle's house, tucked into a small corner of their living room. I can still picture holding the book in my hands and getting it!

Good grief! I have a hard time remembering what I read last year!
The first book I remember making a real impact on me was Island of the Blue Dolphins. But that had to be around 4th grade. Before that, I just don't know.  Kinda sad. 
I love the fact that my kids have the time to read books over and over. They develop a real relationship with what they read.

The first book I remember reading by myself was The Fire Cat when I was in kindergarten. The teacher noticed that I was really reading it (in my head) and wanted me to read it out loud to her. I loved Mrs White, but was too shy to do it.
Still have a copy at my house. Still love it.

Picture books: A tiny twaddly Peter Rabbit with way cutesy pictures ~ I think it was a Tip Top Elf book ~ and Corky, a Golden Book. I remember learning to read using lots of fables in school.
Chapter books: I don't know whether these were my first,but they WERE my best-loved: Misty/Stormy/Sea Star by Marguerite Henry and the Black Stallion series

I have had much trouble remembering - but this sparked a thought that it was probably Fox in Socks. Unless of couarse you would accept a Dick and Jane book because that is what I remember reading when the "light went on" and I was reading myself.
First chapter book I remember reading was Betsy and Tacy.

The first chapter book I read by myself was Ramona the Pest when I was five. I sure did relate to Ramona!
I don't remember my first picture book. There is a book that I think just has pictures of toys and their names, and is called something like, well, Toys, which just sort of "rings a bell" as being from very, very early in my life. I brought it down from my mother's house for my kids, but never unpacked it. ETA: Actually found it for sale used online! Baby's First Toys

Oh, I loved, and still love, The Fire Cat! (I always call it Pickles the Fire Cat; don't think I realized that wasn't the title till I was grown up.) It is one of the books I bought a copy of for my first child before he was even born. We still have my copy, but it's a bit beat up and I tended to draw and write in my books when I was little.
