Does anyone have any suggestions for children magazines for the 5-8 year age range? I'm looking for quality fact-filled magazines to ignite interests in subjects such as geography, history, science, literature and crafts.

When I was a child I had a subscription to World Magazine. It is mostly a science and geography magazine. Family Fun has a lot of craft and kid friendly recipes in it, but it isn't that educational. I read that Amazon is having a sale on it right now so you can get a subscription for about $5. Also, there is Ranger Rick, but I don't know anything about that one.

My 7yo and 9yod enjoy National Geographic kids. Highlights would be another suggestion. Would it be possible to get various children's magazines from your library to see which ones appeal the most to your family?

Would Ask or maybe Dig be something they might like? I have never seen Ask, but we get Dig for ds9 occasionally while at Borders or B&N...but since DH and I both have Anthropology Degrees, we like that kind of stuff

Our home gets both Highlights and National Geographic Kids....both are read almost immediately by BOTH kids!
Another we got for awhile was Ranger Rick's Backyard...that was more on animals.

My suggestion is more for Australian and NZ members, although you might like to subscribe from the northern hemisphere?
Wacky But True.
It has no adds which makes it a winner for me. It has LOTS of history, very visually appealing and a easy to read format for reluctant readers. It is produced by a former teacher lib. who couldn't find suitable mag. for her christian school.
My 9yr old just loves it.

My son enjoyed "Click" magazine (same publisher as Ask). I think there is one called Ladybug or Spider too? These are very high quality and good for that age range. There are no ads and the art/graphics are nicely done. Now we are getting "Ask" for older readers, and he hasn't enjoyed it as much.
The National Geographic kids mag used to be nicer. Now it has many ads and "loud" graphics, though appealing to kids I am sure!
For awhile someone sent us a gift sub. to "Nature Friend", a christian/creationist magazine. More of a "read aloud" for younger ages. The boys liked it. There are drawing contests and lots of other opps. for kids to contribute articles, poems, entries in their nature notebook, etc. Also ad free.
ANd for crafts FAmily Fun is the best. My boys love looking through it. I have gotten a few educational ideas from it in the past (science experiments, some cultural ideas, & nature/outdoor ideas).

We used to get Wild Animal Baby but have just "upgraded" to there next age range called Your Big Backyard. These are National Wildlife Federation magazines. They are packed full of science, geography and of course language-all animal based.
My ds 3 just loves it.

We get Zoo books which they like. The kids have not been drawn to National Kids Geographic or Highlights. They do like Ranger Rick.
I have been eyeing Odessey or Muse. Does anyone have a review about them?
