No matter if kids are educated at home or at school, crafts, artwork, paperwork, etc will accumulate! No one wants to throw those precious items away, but how do you keep it all without it taking over your house?

Each child has a craft box (for things they make rather than draw). When it is full, they have to decide what they would get rid of. This was especially needed for DS who is always making something (big) and always wants to keep it. I didn't want to throw his work away. I will take photos of things he has made when he is ready to ditch it. He often plays with things he makes and eventually they get ruined or lost.

With paper art work, I like the montessori (?????) idea of putting all of their work in a file and at the end of the week, the child chooses what they want to keep and they have to stick it in their book. That way, the things that are kept are meaningful to them and they won't want to keep everything if they have to glue it all in the book - well that's the theory anyway.

With DD, I have to keep a few items. If given the choice of putting it away or putting it in the bin, she'll put it in the bin

I kept much more for child one when he was younger. As they have gotten older, I have become better at keeping a few examples and getting rid of the rest.

I read somewhere that if you keep all of it, there is so much it becomes meaningless. If you keep a few, they are special and you can take good care of them.

Call me a bad mama....I let the stuff clutter the house for only so long. My poor, dear, sweet mother still has 'precious' items made by my brother and me stowed all over her house: in the top drawer of her dresser, the piano bench, in a plastic bag hanging from a doorknob (this last one is actually full of newspaper clippings about *me*).

What I do is take a photo of the great item, so we have that memory forever. If the item is functional (like the clay bowls we just made last week), I will probably consider keeping it, or let the child keep it in his or her room until they no longer want it or it gets broken.

Another idea (that I currently do not use), is to have a frame in which to display and rotate artwork the child has created...drawings, paintings, and such. That way, the child knows how special you think their work is, being displayed in such an honorable manner. I saw this on the TV show "neat" (which is all about decluttering and organizing according to a person's way of processing things).

Here's an idea I got from one of my kid's art classes. Get a photo album and take pictures of everything one a time. If you can get a picture of the child near or holding the piece, that's even better!! Then you will always have a record of it.
