I've decided to use Theresa's idea of studying one topic per day. We tried this out today for the first time and had Math Monday. I think it was a success!

We started our day with cleaning up the playroom/learning room and clearing out some of the clutter. I decided to do something like circle time. We prayed together, and then I read a saint story based on honesty (we're moving through PACE and will study a virtue for a couple of weeks each morning through saint stories and Book of Virtues) and a poem and fable involving honesty. They each did oral narrations of these.

I wanted to start the gnomes, but haven't received all my supplies yet. Instead, dd10 made a page for her main lesson book of her multiplication tables. She shaded each group with a different color. Even though she's been doing multi-digit mult., this was such a good task for her. She seemed to enjoy it and I told her she could use it as a reference in the future. Ds (7) is working on a page of the addition facts.

We broke for lunch and the kids played outside a little (in our wonderfully real autumn air---finally!). After lunch, dd finished her main lesson book page of the math facts while I read from Penrose the Mathematical Cat and did an activity involving the chess board (which ds is so into right now). After that, ds did a page from MUS. I started the Number Devil which they both really liked although I think the concepts are a little high, especially for ds.

Tomorrow we're having science day. I'm hoping it goes as well as today! I am a little apprehensive about not officially "doing" math each day, but we'll see how it goes!

Courtney, it sounds like you all had such a great day. I really like being able to concentrate on just one subject in contrast with having to get 5 or 6 subjects done in one day. It is very freeing to do block lessons, however long you do them.

I was concerned about not doing math everyday as well, so we do just a bit of math practise during our circle time. This helps keep it in their heads and it calms my worries.

I have no idea what the Number Devil or gnomes are for? Can anyone clarify?

What a great idea to use the PACE virtues for your reading and poetry during circle time! I already have it and I couldn't figure out a way to get it in.

I do love the idea of the focus on one area for one day. I have been wondering if it will work for us so thanks again for the glimpse into your day.

The Number Devil is a book that talks about mathematical concepts in a story format (a young boy dreams about the 'number devil' and enters a land of mathematical adventures). It's a pretty long book, not a picture book or story book.

Both my kids (7 & 9) enjoyed it as a read aloud, and the older one has read it on her own as well. There is software to match, and they also enjoy that.

Can't help you on the gnomes, but I'm thinking probably something from Waldorf?

The math gnomes are from Elizabeth and Katherine's Serendipity website. They've shared wonderful stories for teaching math concepts to the younger children.
