Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Went to sign my kids up for parish RE classes-I don't think we "need" to, but Father said it would be good for the parish's "sense of community" if all were involved. Whatever. Anyway, when I signed the girls up I commented that I would be attending with them at least the first few classes. To which the DRE said that they didn't have a teacher for K or 1st, would I be interested? So I said yes. I'll have two of my three girls in the K class with me.
I looked over the materials they gave me-BORING!
I'd like to have a few, Montessori type activities for the kids, any suggestions?
And I can't find the children's Mass kit online-does anyone have a link?
I've got to run-hungry kids-but I know I'll have more questions for you guys later on. Oh, please pray for me in this endeavor! I'm excited about it-but very nervous about doing a good job.
Jennifer

PS I took my girls with me to see "my" classroom. Little tables and chairs, bulletin boards, chalk board and white board-all the things my girls aren't used to. They asked me if we could go to the classroom every day to do their schoolwork. Hmmm...

What a great opportunity for you and the kids! Prayers coming.

Mass kits can be bought from Our Father's House as a whole kit or from Catholic Montessori as individual pieces. Cay just passed that link along. I think there's another place, but I don't know it off the top of my head.

You should read a bit about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for some ideas, also.

Elizabeth got me a copy of A is for Altar which is for sale on "Catholic Montessori" which I think would be really nice for that age.

I used Little Acts of Grace with my first and second graders last year. It was one of my best supplements!
They realy liked the book. We had some religious stickers and prayer cards to give out each month. I am not sure what your parish RE's budget is per year.

I know you will do an excellent job. What a blessing you will be for those children in your class.

I will be praying.

God bless,

Marybeth

Jennifer,

As I'm sure you know, the K-1 attention span is, well, about five minutes long. I think Montessori activities would be just great! Religious craft activities are OK, too. (One of my CCD teachers long ago had the K class make Easter hats with paper plates and stick-on bows; they had a parade for the CCD classes. Not religious, but totally darling.) Don't forget music!

Children that age also can benefit from a "field trip" to the church (maybe with Father?) to see the altar up close and learn about the different, special things in your particular church (relics, statues, ??). Our last pastor did this once a year at our vespers/Advent wreath making activity and the kids loved it.

Good luck!

Jennifer,
You'll do a great job! I became a CCD teacher the exact same way you did!
And I'm still involved with our new parish's CCD program, even though I hometeach my own children CCD. You'll be very blessed!!!
Tracy
