Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is anyone practicing the 4real philosophy while using Seton Home Study School books/curriculum, especially in jr. high and high school? How do you do it?

Diane,

I know Lisa (Lisbet) is using Seton this year -- but she might be in labor right now!! I'm sure there are others, but I know she'd be helpful once she's not preoccupied!

Diane,

I used Seton the last two years (but I am not using it this year) with 5 children ages 16 down to K. I added living books to the history and science, which was easy to do. It does get harder the older they get because there is so much work involved. I used Seton those two years because I had a new baby, along with an 18 month old and my 5 school aged children. I couldn't do it all and Seton filled that need.

We did Seton also with our oldest last year. We did a lot of what Lisa suggested. We added A LOT of living books and we had lots of natural sciences outdoors. We had gathering time and my oldest always attended that. Our most memorable was the unit we did together on the MIssissippi River which included Minn of the Mississippi, Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn.

It worked well for us. It was nice to have Seton for the writing courses.

Blessings,

If you want to add in a lot, you might want to consider not using them for grading. We used about 1/2 of 8th grade last year and there was zero time for add ins without taking other stuff out.

I used Seton a couple of years back for my then 14-yod as her 9th grade ... she had been in and out of parochial schools, so for her -- doing Catholic School at home was not a problem. But, Seton is such a classical Catholic school model -- including the reprinting of old Catholic school textbooks -- that unless you did an awful lot of tweaking, I din't know how you would combine the two.... especially in the older grades.

The shear amount of work scheduled would preclude many "tenets" of a CM education ... short lessons, mostly essay or writing tests (CM didn't like tests that were strictly memorizing facts), living books over text books, etc .... I think you COULD take some Seton resources and use them, but then why pay for Seton?

Diane, Here is a thread where people have discussed this question as well as some of the joys and drawbacks of using Seton.

Seton and Real Learning

Looking through the many older threads where Seton comes up, it seems like Seton in its entirety is most commonly turned to in middle school and high school when moms are looking for a little more structure and accountability. Before that, it's not uncommon for people to pick and choose some subjects/materials from Seton and then "mix it up" with a Charlotte Mason/Real Learning approach.

You can try the search engine (on the upper right of the screen) and search for "Seton" in All Forums to pull up the old threads. Warning: I found 21 pages!    And not all will be helpful as Seton sometimes refers to other things, like the saint or a building.

Hope that helps!
