Ladies I am hosting the Aug 20 Loveliness Fair on Lesson Planning/Back to School Supplies. I would love to link up to anyone who can add to the conversation. Please don't feel that you must have detailed or daily plans to participate. I am looking forward to hearing from 'alternative planners' and unschoolers as well. It would be nice to have a variety of CM, unit, Montessori, and unschooler posts to share.
I am out of town til Monday and will begin compiling links then. Looking fwd to hearing from you!
Kim

And I should have added you do not need to be a blogger to participate! Send me your contribution by email and I will add it to the body of my posting with your name on it. You can send pics along as well if you like.

What a fascinating idea, I'm just amazed at the variety of ideas for fairs.
Could you please explain a little more what you are hoping for ?

Ok, I'm confused, do you want copies of our entire plans or just some sample days? I don't blog so I'd have to e-mail but I don't want to overwhelm you with what isn't useful for purposes here. I know you don't want my tomes in their entirety. The funniest part was that so far I have finished a semester worth of plans for 2 of my older dc - using Kolbe as a guide and I'm not doing hardly anything in Kolbe plans but still somehow all these plans helped me. I'm still trying to figure that out.
The method that works for me - we have color coded index cards (for memory work and Friday catechism quiz games as this helps me know at a glance what level question to ask of whom) and notebooks. Each child has their own color. The notebooks have a clear plastic outer cover so I can tuck in sheets of 3 ring paper on the outside of the binder just under this plastic. I put one days lessons on 1 sheet of 3 ring paper and tuck 5 days in at a time. We modify each week as needed but I have my general path and sequence spelled out so I don't have to try to keep it all straight during the school year when my brain generally is out to lunch. I'm planning to have some sort of presentation sequence in mind for my Montessori stuff - but this will have to be done differently - still I want a path roughed out so I don't have to think which presentation is the natural follower of which. I haven't gotten there yet and there is tons of prep time. I see the language materials being helpful to have for my 7 yo and the LD child. My 5yo I'm not sure but if he shows interest - fine. I'm going to make sure we do some insets for all the fine motor lags and the therapist has a ton of things for the 13 yo to do that look just like Montessori practical life so obviously that is handy. I don't know if I can simply walk away while he works, though, and especially not if the 5 yo is in there so I'm trying to plan command central at the dining room table so I can see the Montessori room and work with someone else far enough away that discussion doesn't break concentration. I'm a bit overwhelmed by how much of my time will be required even with a lot of independent work spelled out. So far I know: spelling and grammar for the 7th grader will involve me daily, the 5th grader will probably be ok on his own except for the weekly meeting and a few presentations, but in order for things to work really well, I still need to find experiment or science project ideas and need to make all my Montessori cards for classification (thanks to Lapazfarm). My 7 yo is just barely reading so he will need me daily for most of his work either observing or nearby to help or to present Montessori lessons. My 5yo needs me all the time and I have noticed that I have to watch closely between him and the 13 yo LD who will be here. This child will require me for at least 30 min. to 1 hour per day of direct work and a lot of supervision. I'm not sure if there is enough of me to go around. I also have tons of work to make some of the Montessori materials or set up presentations if this whole thing will work at all.
My highschooler has requested very specific day to day lessons so that is my next task before the school year starts Aug. 20.

Kim,
I'm not very clear on what you're looking for with this. I'd like to participate, but not quite sure what you want....specific lesson plans, lesson plan organizers?? I'd appreciate some more explanation for this very visual person. This sounds like a wonderful one to do!!!
Thanks so much!

Sorry for the delay in responding. We were gone all wknd.
To answer your questions - anything that is related to your upcoming school year is relevant! That might be a list of back to school supplies. Ours may well look different than the public school list and different from one another as well. One family may have a stack of latin texts and classical lit. Another may have a box of art supplies and notebooks. Another may have backpacks to tote their supplies in between a full schedule of travel or music lessons.
Maybe you have a booklist or course of study worked out. Actual plans are good too. Those can be a unit study you have put together, a daily rhythm, a year's worth of topics you hope to cover, or a weekly schedule.
You could share what curriculum or methods you tried last year that you are going to be using more extensively this year. Did you discover nature notebooks? Did you find your dream math program? Did your child take off with a foreign language?
Or conversely, those which did not live up to your expectations. Were there any big curricular disappointments? Maybe it wasn't curriculum that brought you down last year. Maybe it was a scheduling problem, or unreasonable expectations, or illness. If you have had any major revelations about what happened and why it would be very fruitful to share those.
You could share general goals - a vision - for the year such as creating a Montessori prepared environment or following a purist CM program like Mater Amabilis and why you feel this is a good fit for your family this year.
In short, if you are excited about it please share it. : ) There is no one right way to home educate and it is such a treat to get a peek into other's homes especially as we start a new year.
Kim
