My dd has written a letter to her best friend from back "home." She expressed herself beautifully in her nice handwriting and decorated the letter with flowers and hearts, HOWEVER, it is riddled with misspellings!! I hate to turn this into a spelling lesson and squash the joy of writing, BUT I'm also embarrassed at her spelling. Do I send it as is??
Some examples:
brik instead of break
now instead of know
hole instead of whole
less instead of least
dun instead of done
divishinl instead of divisional
I'm actually proud of that last word!!
She's going into the 4th grade and is dyslexic. She's worked VERY hard in the past two years. In fact 2 weeks ago she started reading On the Banks of Plum Creek!!
At the beginning of the summer she wasn't picking books up on her own. But we went to the library 2-3 times per week and she has blossomed (as I have backed off). She even volunteers to participate during the library skits which involves reading a part in front of 30+ kids and parents. And she's not embarrassed at all!! We've never told her she's dyslexic. She knows reading and spelling are harder for her but believes if she just keeps working hard she'll get better. So I'm very proud of her! I'm not embarrassed at her progress.
She's waiting for me to send it off. My gut says to just mail it off and not care. I haven't told her she has misspellings. Personally, I think its adorable but I'm her mom. And I know what struggles she's had with reading and spelling. But I also know I'm not always objective. Maybe I should include this post with the letter!?
She would be mortified if she knew she had misspellings and would maybe fix it. But I don't know that she would write very often if she knew she would be writing 2nd drafts every time. What do you do?
I just showed the letter to my husband and he thinks I should just put those words on flashcards and work with her during her spelling lesson. But, that I should send the letter as is because she worked so hard on it. Any thoughts?
She just came over and asked if I had mailed the letter yet. I said no and told her to go get an envelope. Then she asked if she had spelled anything wrong. I told her yes and she said, "Okay, help me fix them." This happened as I was finishing this post and it was painless!!! Why do I make mountains for myself??

Okay, I am a terrible speller. If you link on all of my post you will probably find at least one miss spelled word!
Even though I know that I am very poor at spelling and grammar, if someone were to point it out directly I probably would be very embarrassed and not open my self up to that kind of thing again.
However, it is important to use correct grammar and proper spelling.
Therefore, I think I would just send this letter and not worry about it. But, I would try to devise a plan to prepare for next time. For instance, could she type her letter on the computer, where it would automatically underline the misspelled words? (Personally, I often type out letters to correct spelling and then hand write them)
Or, clearly state before she starts decorating the page you are going to correct spelling, etc.
I truly wish that someone would have taken the time with me when I was younger to understand the importance of proper and correct verbal communication! Your daughter is lucky to have a mom like you!!!!

I think your husband's solution was perfect, IF your dd hadn't come up with an even more perfect one!

Join the legion of mountain builders, Lillian.
I'm so glad it worked out, and I think you ALL had great instincts!

This is so great. For some reason, I just loved reading this.
When in doubt....procrastinate ....say a prayer (or begin a thread on the 4 real forum ) .....and it WILL work out..somehow or another!
I love that she asked. Beacause then it was OK and not counter productive, not possibly taking two steps back, etc. ad infinitum, ad nauseum. And, you know that she isn't embarrassed to ask for your help to fix them. So sweet.
