I'm going to be purging our game shelves this afternoon, getting rid of games with missing pieces or those that are just twaddle. What are some that you all consider 'must haves' on your game shelf? Here is what I will be keeping:
Cranium Family Fun
Cranium Cadoo
Boggle
3 decks of playing cards
checkers
chess
Mad Dash
Apples to Apples (jr. edition and party box)
Monopoly
Uno
I'm thinking of adding Dominos and Connect Four.
What is worth purchasing? What about games for the littles?

We have loved many games from HABA or SELECTA. They are pricy but the quality is really very nice.
The cooperative games have been very good, espicially for the littles, so that everyone is happy when the game is over.

We love SET and Quiddler.
Timberdoodle has some great little games for the whole family, such as Sherlock and Tally Ho! which are only $6.00!
For a board game, we like Sequence.
The younger kids have a couple of Discovery Toys games that they play with often. Not always the right way, but there is some learning going on.

We like the Professor Noggin themed quiz card games (they have a bunch of themes, such as Countries of the World, U. S. History, North American Birds, etc.). There are two levels of questions so that younger players can answer the easier ones.
Also...the Scrambled States of America is good fun! So is Moose in the House, but it's not quite so educational.

My kids love Chutes and Ladders and it's a good numbers learning game
My kids always liked Sorry, another good early counting game.
I agree with UNO and Boggle and Rush Hour

I second most HABA and Selecta games. These are always favorites here, I love the quality, and when they bring them to game days with our homeschool group, they are always a favorite.

Not technically a board game, but we have Bingo ($15 from target). With a crank and all -- it comes with tons of cards, (not a lot of little pieces to cover the cards -- but we use pennies when we run out of those). It's been great to entertain a crowd (played with ten kids) -- and it's quiet... well upon until someone shouts BINGO!
And my sister's kids love Scrambled United States.

We have really liked "The Way Things Work" and you definitely learn a bit along the way. It's enjoyable for adults to play, and my 6 yr old likes it as well.

So does our 3-year-old... but DH and I got fed up with it, and ended up hiding it in the closet.  It seems like maybe 1 in 4 times, the game just WILL NOT END. The term "purgatory" comes to mind. And then there are those little plastic cherries that inevitably get lost. We think it should be renamed "Hi-Ho Choking Hazard."
If you don't mind playing it, I salute you for your patience! 
To the OP: we also love the cooperative games for little ones. "Harvest Time" is our favorite so far.

Phase 10. A great card game for 8 and up. Even the kids who have moved away have this one. You can get it at Target for about $6.

I love it! Thanks for the thread! Based on your recomendations we bougth Cranium Family Fun but had to return it b/c we're a three member family. We traded it out for Cranium Cadoo and loved it! What a great time of laughing and silliness.
I'm going to continue to check the games listed here and add a few more over the summer and get rid of some old ones.
One recommendation I'd like to make for younger girls is Madeline. It's a really pretty game. It's matching/memory on a board game and you have to find all of Genevieve's puppies. You can play cooperatively or competitively. Great game.
