Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone have any favorite books on tape for summer travel? We already have LOTR, Narnia and working on building up the Anne Books.   Chapter books or series of the caliber of the above books that even DH would like?

We only have dial-up so downloading wouldn't work so well! So just things we could buy or get from the library. (I'm dreaming of DSL!)

Just for a FYI, we discoved some wonderful Catholic Dramas on Tape (well, CD!) by Regina Martyrum! We listened to Ondessonk (St. Isaac Jogues), The one about St. Helena and The last viking. They are terrific! www.ReginaMartyrum.com

I hope it's ok to bring this topic up again!

Last year we listened to the books in the The Melendy Quartet series. The first in The Saturdays, The Four Story Mistake...etc...they are by Elizabeth Enright. They were huge hits here!

Hank the Cowdog is very funny! Everyone gets a kick out of them. Nice and light!

The older kids (7 and up) have listened to Wulf the Saxon over and over. Dh and I have enjoyed this, too, while traveling.

I highly recommend the Eric Idle version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Also, The Penderwicks comes in audio book form. We have just finished the book and are going to listen to the audio version next.

My son wants to get The Phantom Tollbooth the next time we head to the library.

I know this is somewhat controversial, but we loved the Harry Potter tapes. All of them. The narrator is wonderful and really becomes each of the characters. On one vacation we ended one book and purposely pulled into a Wal Mart to buy the next one. They're that good. Looking forward next month to the last one!

This looks very interesting, Alice!! I've been googling on where to find the audio series... any ideas? New or used, whichever. I'll check the library as well!

Thanks for all the suggestions ladies! I'll be googling away (slow dial-up... takes a while!)

Hi Mary,

Where did you find the Redwall series on CD? I checked at Amazon and they're either outrageous or unavailable. You can't buy the whole set ... am I missing something?

I second the Penderwicks on CD. We listened on our trip to Va last summer. I had to stand outside the car with the beeper for our restaurant table call while dh, ds(8) and dd(3)waited in the air conditioned car, listening. They had a hard time turning it off. I was surprized dd enjoyed it so much.

Hi Tina,
We listened to them on cassette. I second the Harry Potter books. Jim Dale is a wonderful narrator and we enjoy what he has to say about books on tape at the end of each one. I'd love to send it in on a quarterly report one day.
He has also narrated Peter and the Star Catchers and Peter and the Shadow Thieves (both by Dave Barry). I would recommend those also.
God bless,
Mary

We have listened to Calico Captive before and that was really good. My kids enjoy the Freddy the Pig series. We don't have a lot of good ones on tape or CD at our library. I have been writing down all the ideas everyone has listed. I'll have to check to see if any of them are at our library.

We LOVED! the Redwall saga on DVD (we listened to it twice on our road trip!), Centerburg Tales, and the biggest hit was Angel on the Square.

We were road-tripping with an 8 boy, 7 girl and 4-1/2 boy and they LOVED these three!

Mary, I second these two! Very gripping stories.

We use Cracker Barrel's Books on Audio program when traveling. For $3.49 a week, it can't be beat.

We've enjoyed many books on tape by Jim Weiss and also Full Cast Audio. Jim Weiss has a wonderful range, and Full Cast Audio, led by author Bruce Coville, gives a radio show feel to the books. Full Cast Audio has a mix of new and classic stories, some unabridged. My husband has always enjoyed them as much as the kids. There are a lot to choose from for both of these books on tape storytellers, in all age categories.

Peace and Laughter,

We just returned from a drive from NH to FL. We enjoyed listening to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as well as Swiss Family Robinson. Check your library - ours has several Redwall audios as well which we have previously enjoyed.
Have fun!!
