Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm just wondering what others do with their preschoolers. I'm unsure of the terminology as a Brit, but I'm thinking about my 3 year old dd.

I've been thinking of sending her to the local Montessori nursery for a couple of afternoons a week -- to give her a chance to use all their lovely equipment, maybe learn to ride a tricycle, and make some local friends.

I sent my older two to playgroup and then nursery school, but at that point I was thinking in terms of preparation for school (not hs).

At the moment my 3yo spends a lot of time on my lap, or aimlessly wandering around, not wanting to play with things I suggest -- while I'm working with the other two I mean. I suppose I'm just feeling guilty about how much attention she gets .

On the other hand we do loads of out-of-the-house activities already, and adding more trekking around may really disrupt the flow of our days, not to mention turn our remaining quiet days into busy days. And it's a lot of money (that I could otherwise spend on buying some Montessori equipment for us).

Experience/advice? I should really know what I'm doing by now, buuuut...

Elizabeth, my older two both went to a day care nursery for one day a week for a couple of years. With eldest dd, both dh and I were working part time, so it was a need. I originally intended to send middle dd to playgroup for a couple of sessions (for the same reasons as you, and also to give a bit of uninterrupted time to work with eldest dd) but we liked the nursery a lot so in the end stuck with that. Going for a whole day rather than having to run in and out twice for a short playgroup session was a plus. Keeping up with friends out of nursery was harder than it would have been with playgroup as we rarely saw the other parents - however, it turned out that one of middle dd's nursery friends also went to our Church, and they are still good friends. Off swimming together this afternoon, in fact.

When she is older littlest dd will go to playgroup for a couple of sessions. My neighbour, who is also her godmother, runs the playgroup and will take her and bring her home (how convenient is that!) and it will be paid for by the government preschool vouchers. Did you know you can formally request a playgroup or nursery school not to fill in all the National Curriculum tickboxes and paperwork, so that your child can just go to playgroup to play and make friends without having to be constantly scrutinised for signs of having performed each tiny incremental task? The playgroup are not allowed to tell you this, but if you know and tell them ...

I think whether or not to go down the nursery / playgroup route depends a lot on the individual child and your family dynamic. Some children (like mine) really enjoy the social side of nursery; others would hate being away from home and Mum. Also, would it be a help once your new little one arrives, or would the trekking around just be a burden?
