I'm trying to move into more of a real learning type of learning environment. We do lots of learning thru the day just like everybody, but we do workbook type work too for math and LA 4 days a week for about an hour to 2 hrs depending on the mood.
I hate saying "time for your school work" but don't know what else to call it.

My DD age 5 just calls it her "homeschool" whenever she sits down to do HWT or some workbook stuff. She struts to the table saying "time for my homeschool" just happy as can be
My 8 yr old son does not share the same enthusiasm.....

I know the name itself is not a big deal but I just wish I had something else to call it other than "school" KWIM?
What do you call it?

When we do at the table type stuff like copywork we have been saying " lesson" or just "lets do copywork" naming the individual activity not necessarily the time if that makes sense.

i have been wondering too about labeling what is slowly becomeing a lifestyle as much as a educational approach.

DD has been puzzled lately about what "awayschool" kids do when they are not at school. "so do they get to learn anything at home?" [

Your dd sounds like mine...when do you think the shiny-ness will wear off?

I know there are some on this board that call that sort of work "table time". We adopted that and it seems to work well, even when ds (13yo) does his "table time work" elsewhere.
I'm not Ann, but as far as the "shiny-ness" of it all wears off, hopefully never! I have to admit my dd, finishing up 2nd grade, has started to say things about how much fun "real school" would be with all the other kids. She's our social butterfly. I think she'll be fine though, as long as I can provide her with lots of opportunities to be with other kids.

I've been calling it learning time, but then I realized that we are learning all day long.

I like Maggie's idea of just naming it the individual activity, like copywork or grammar.

We have a defined school time during our day. History, science (reading, not experiments), Bible/religion, read alouds, readers - any kind of books - go dubbed "couch work" or "soft work" by my dc, because it happens on the couch. Math, handwriting and everything written takes place on the dining room table and is called "seat work." But the whole thing is school.

We call it "formal work." Not sure why or where that title came from. I suppose "formal study" would be more precise. Hmmmmmmmm

Hi Ann, great question! We gather every morning for *Table Time* which includes prayers, devotions any bible or Saints readings, and then we begin with Math. Everyone must come for the initial Table Time and then some may go to their own work space (like the 2 yo ) . We kind of have Pegs for each part of our day:
*Breakfast time
*Table Time
*Outside Time
*Lunch time
*Quiet/Nap Time
*Read-Aloud Time
*Afternoon Playtime/Outdoor Time
*Teatime (not everyday)
*Chore Time
*Dinner Time
*Family Rosary Time
*Bath & Bedtime w/ More Read-Aloud Time

We may add or take away from this depending on our activities, but this is a general layout/rhythmn for us most days!

I would love to hear more about your 'routines' and how long each of your 'times' are usually for. HOw old are your kids?

I love the idea of having pegs.. just haven't got around to doing it consistently each day. The kids seem to respond so well to things they can expect though.

Usually I just say to ds "time to get going on your projects" or "why not get some math done" or I'll say "lets go read" or "grab your nature journal, we're going out!"

Dd(5) is still definitely in the shiney stage. She gets up in the morning and asks "Is it school today?" If I answer her that it is, she says "Yesssss!"

Having done this for a while, I think we're in a groove. They know what I expect of them and they know the morning is for subjects. I have an assignment book where I list each child's daily subjects and they check off when they've completed those subjects. I loosely base it on the classical form (they don't do nearly as much writing as I would like) but by this time of year we're (read--"I'm") more loosely structured. Funny, last week my 14 yo dd reminded me that I didn't make an assignment list for the week. I guess the steady routine makes it unnecessary to tell them it's school time (or what have you). At most, I'll ask, "Did you finish all your work?"
Of course, this may all change now that I'm starting to school my third child in September.
