Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm so excited! In October, we're starting a wee little co-op for 12 catholic children between the ages of 5 and 10.

It's going to be an integrated study on the FIAR book, How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World
and
3 in 1: A Picture of God

We'll be meeting for 3 hours on Fridays for 5 weeks. There will be a field trip (to either an apple orchard or Bama Pie Company) and a party to end.

So, I come to you wonderful CREATIVE ladies for your thoughts on what you think would be fun and education to do!

Oh, and the kids below age 5/6 will be taken aside to do related, but more little ones age appropriate things too!

This might be held at my house, if that matters. We're going to try for the parish youth building, but don't know if that will happen or not.

Just in case you can't tell - I'm so excited!!
Can't wait to see your ideas. You ladies are always inspiring!

Are you looking for craft ideas or other types of things?

yes, crafty type enrichment!

I looked on the FIAR and Homeschool Share sites, but I'm eager to add that Catholic flair to it.

I can't find anything for the 3 in 1 book...

The basic schedule looks like we'll
read the apple pie book

discuss vocabulary and kids take turns playing parts to pantomime the story in chronological order

paint our our funny animals eating at the table picture for the cover of our memory books

short break ?? potty and drinks?

read 3 in 1
plant seed of faith pots and decorate. there will be wire stems with apple shapes that will have the name of the fruits of the spirit on them (I'm thinking parents could use them as rewards for doing Godly behavior - earn apples/fruit??)

short snack break (parents take turns bringing apple snacks)

discuss what a plant is, how it grow and the basic parts
make sure to note what items where plants in the apple pie story

plant beans in various methods and explain scientific method
we'll chart how the different cups grow under different conditions each week

That's the outline for the first session.

The last session will be a field trip followed by a group dinner party.

Any suggestions? I've never been in a co-op and never planned one either, so I want it to be great, but not too much, kwim?

I think your plan so far sound fantastic--you're going to be great at this co-op stuff!

Just a couple of ideas...

apple prints: cut an apple (top to bottom), dip in paint and press onto something. You can add leaves and stem with brushes or stamps. You could do this on paper or something more long lasting like bookbags (I think Oriental Trader sells them by the dozen for a relatively inexpensive price)

sample different kinds of apples: get as many different kinds of apples as you can and slice 'em up. You could do this as a snack idea or as a project. You could even graph the results...so many ways to do that.
You could also do this as an apple i.d. kind of thing...who can guess the most apple varieties (my kids did something like this on a recent field trip...can't remember the exact details right now).

I'll keep thinking on this.
