Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The other FHC thread got me thinking. My dd turns 7 in September, but according to local rules she won't be making her FHC until summer 2009 (when she will be nearly 9!).

I would like her to do it next summer -- I think she'll be perfectly ready. I would also (probably) like to prepare her myself for all the obvious reasons (just deleted a paragraph for the sake of charity).

I need to talk to my pp about this, obviously. I'm a complete novice as she's my eldest (and I'm a convert myself, so didn't do this myself). What materials would you recommend for preparing a child at home? I want to be forearmed with all the info before I speak to Father.

I'd get CHC's 2nd Grade lesson plans and start there. It has a wonderful supplement that will get you more than ready ... you also might want to get a copy of the book How to Book of the Mass and The Faith Explained for you to read and feel more confident with her FHC prep....

You also might want to check out the

Jesus Our Life -- the 2nd grade book for Faith and Life from Ignatius Press -- that will prepare her and with added activities that you can find by searching the archives, you should be all set....

Hope this helps!

Elizabeth, also remember that as the primary teacher of your daughter, you can decide when she is ready to receive -- than talk to your pastor. He can help, he can quiz her and give her more instructions -- but there are no "rules" for when a child receive FHC, just tradition once Pius Xth mandated that younger children be allowed to receive....
