Which comes 1st...DOING or DESIGNING?

After you've decided on a topic of study and brainstormed a list of accompanying activities, do you get started on the activities right away and worry about throwing it all into a lapbook display later? Or do you sit down and "design" your lapbook space (folds, mini-books, etc.) and then fit your activities into the design accordingly?

Thanks...I'm trying to make this EASIER on myself and not more complicated than it has to be!

When we lapbook, we do then design. You can always add more extensions at the end.

When we're not using the pre-planned Hands-of-a-Child projects, we do and design together, really. I might sit down before starting and plan a few projects, and then we get going. Then as things come together, I'm winging it and planning for projects and activities for the spaces that we have left. It's a very, ummmm, fluid process. This would be good if I enjoyed that feeling of creativity on the fly, or uncertainty or whatever, but instead, I'm awake in the middle of the night wondering what to do to fill a certain space in the lapbook.

As I'm researching for our lapbook I have a general idea of where I will be putting things. I just take it as it comes. If I find something and it looks like it will fit nicely on a flap then I do that or if I see something else and think "ooo, that would make a nice booklet" then we do that.

Uh-huh. That's me too (and that's why I asked) ...I was thinking that maybe I was doing it backwards (I usually DESIGN 1st... all the booklets, folds, etc. and then lay awake thinking about activities to fill them). (Actually, I don't lay awake anymore. I'm too tired! It's when I'm up with the baby in the middle of the night that I'm thinking about lapbooking!! ) Anyway, I was thinking that maybe I should just DO the projects and then find a way to squeeze them into a lapbook format.

Sounds like I just need to stay flexible and be willing to go with whatever.
