Well, we are sitting here under about 8 inches of snow (less now as some has already melted from yesterday) and I was thinking of our favorite "first snow" books - the ones where you know it's fall and it's an early snow.
The Big Snow – Berta and Elmer Hader
First Snow – Kim Lewis
Winter Shoes for Shadow Horse – Linda Oatman High (not really a fall snow although a first snow)
Other favorite first/early snow books?
Gwen, how much did you get up north?

Sorry, we don't have too many snow books down here -- early, middle or late --

Mary, I kid you not.....we did not have one snowflake on the ground as of last night. Now, we did wake up to a dusting of white yesterday morning, which quickly melted away with the steady rain and we got a bit of sleet instead of heavy rain for a few hours in the evening. My mom called to see how our trees were doing and I was a little perplexed by that. She went on to say that she and my sisters in the same area (not far from you)had suffered many broken trees and limbs. Well, I'll be! You'd think the least my dh could do since he goes out into the world each day is let me know what's going on out there! (or I could turn on a radio once in a while).

I compiled a longish list of my favorite snow books two years ago:
Snow!
Unfortunately, it takes for ever to load...

Chari Bryan is here this week and we spent Monday at the beach!!! It's in the 70's and 80's here. I'm still trying to convince the kids that it is actually Fall!! Is this early snow typical for you in CO?

Wow, snow - my dc would be jealous. We might see some snow in January (flurries mostly but an occassional dusting - and once or twice we even had 6" and it lasted more than 1 day, but that is rare.
We create a scene whenever we visit where there is snow as the dc all ooh and aah, stop pedestrian traffic as they scoop up the snow from the curb (even dirty snow is a marvel to them).
We always try to have a flex day in our schedule so that if we do get snow, we can take the whole day off and "sled" (using trash can lids, swimming pools, whatever will work). There is absolutely no concern with the traffic as snow on the ground shuts the whole city down - it's a very stiff fine and insurance does not cover accidents if you are driving when roads are closed.
Unfortunately, don't have any book suggestions beyond what is already posted - but couldn't resist oohing and aahing over your snow!

The average first snow for the Denver area is Oct. 19 (I looked up the exact date ) so this is very typical although the amount was higher than usual for the first snow. We almost always get one or more snows in October (we've had some snowy Halloweens). We can get snow here as early as early September. But it doesn't last long - it's already gone today. And it will warm back up again for more seasonable fall weather.
And, Gwen who is only about 25 miles north of me didn't have any accumulation while south and east of us, they got considerably more than our 8 inches. We can have funny weather that way.

These higher producing wet storms are caused by an "upslope." The storm moves southeast south of Denver but then it shoots north and then back west until it curves completely back and picks up a lot of steam. These are the highest snow accumulations but as you can see, they may not even make it as far northwest as the suburbs.
I'm glad this one missed us even though the kids were begging to drive to Grandma's to play in the snow . It looks like too many trees took a big beating .

Another first snow book:
The Snow Speaks (Nancy White Carlstrom) - starts with a first snow then settles deeper into winter.
Anyone besides us had a "first snow" yet this fall?

YES! We had snow a couple weeks ago....probably about 7 inches....it was so gorgeous we could hardly belive it! It's like a winter wonderland around here...all the pine and fir trees. And, it's so nice in Idaho b/c the whole city doesn't shut down. It was white for about a week here and then melted, and it's been pretty warm here. WAITING for the next snow!

One of my favorite early winter books is:
Waiting for Winter. Such a great addition to the children's book world; I love the illustrations.
and we just got The Runaway which is the poem by Robert Frost and it takes place at first snowfall...
Grandmother Winter is an excellent new snow book also...

While visiting for Thanksgiving, we had our first snow, but it was just a dusting. This is central PA...I think there was more today.

Oh my you really should tell me if you tag me on line
Gosh, now I don't remember, imagine that! But it sure wasn't anywhere near 8 in. Just kidding; i am sincerely going to try to check in more often. And thanks for all the first snow books. We'll still get them for the next snow, if that ever comes.
