This is a listing of picture books that cover history arranged in chronological order from ancient to modern times.

Different periods are in separate message boxes to help with visual organization and make it easier to locate particular time periods or historic events by year. It is compiled from recommendations here on 4 Real as well as various blogs and much personal searching and reviewing of available books.

It is acknowledged that it is heavy with United States books for last several centuries, which is by nature of the large number published in the US and majority of members here being in US.

Attempts were made to keep it to books that really are true picture books (not early readers or nonfiction data type books) and high quality in text and illustration. Not everything fits that requirement and some lean more toward nicely illustrated non-fiction books. Especially in the time periods where there are multiple resources, it was easier to be pickier on what does fit the criteria. In time periods where there is little available and there would be more leeway to include books that are not strictly "picture books." Also please pre-read as to the suitability of any resource for your family/child.

There are lots of great picture book biographies out there and some are included, especially if they focus on a particular event or time period in that person's life. But not all are as it is hard to put them in chronological order with events since they cover a span of time and there are so many and it really is a category to itself. So if you see those type missing that is why at this time.

We are looking for additional recommendations of high quality history picture books that were overlooked and could be added, especially long lost favorites which don't appear on other listings or newly published ones that wouldn't be on the radar yet. Submissions for the early centuries are especially appreciated as there is less available covering those time periods in comparison to more recent centuries. Also if you find errors or broken links please let us know in a PM. This is by nature a work in progress, as it can never really be complete, but it is an attempt.

****If you use this list in any way online or share online or with groups please link and site the source (4 Real home education forum)****

So explore the listings and enjoy the historical reading journey. I hope it is a helpful resource for you as a home educator.

I'm there with Macbeth and Angela, fantastic and wow! Thanks so much for this list! I think everything aught to be able to be learnt from picture books There are few thing more enjoyable for all ages than a good picture book.

Though an Aussie, I for one am happy to see all the US books. It will be a great resource for us for studying US history. I just wouldn't know about these books otherwise. As for a list of Australian history picture books... Where are you Erin? What do you think could be included here? I'm sorry to say I haven't a lot on my own bookshelves.

I will be interested to see what others here have to add too, plus any recommendations for absolute favourites.
