I just finished Karen Hesse's Stowaway - a diary-form novel about a teen boy who stows away on Captain Cook's ship and sails to Tahiti, Australia, etc.
It's very well done. There are a couple of brief (and undetailed) mentions of unclothed natives, and, of course, deaths of the crew due to disease and accidents, but nothing gory or too awful.
It's easy reading, probably better suited for a 14-year-old than an older teen, but I found it very interesting.

Yes! He also wrote a couple of books for the oop Landmark series - my son just read, The Explorations of Pere Marquette. Wonderful book!

I noticed a few of his books (4 or 5) are free on Kindle.

Erin:
I'd like to recommend Rebecca Barnhouse's The Coming of the Dragon. I intended to skim a few pages here and there to ensure that it was OK for my 13 yo to read, but I ended up reading the whole thing, sympathizing with the characters, and finding a couple of good surprises, one of which was that I liked the book enough to stick with it. Some characters were a little flat, but they were minor ones. I had to read it in a hurry as we borrowed it from the library and two or three of my boys and possibly my 14 yog will be reading it as well.
ETA: History tie-in: Norse; this book recounts, with creative liberties taken where the author needed to fill in, the end of the tale of Beowulf.

I recently picked up a book at a used book sale called
Looking for the Kind: An Inklings Novel by David Downing.
This was printed by Ignatius Press. I haven't read it yet, but it looked promising.
Also printed by Ignatius Press that would fall under teen/Adult would be Michael O'Brien's Novels. My favorite is Father Elijah...not sure of the rest. Also The Red Horse is huge and long, but lots of battle and war details.

I just finished reading Looking for the King, a surprise find at my library. It was a nice, quick read. Not as exciting as I expected but nice. The author places Lewis and Tolkien in the story which was interesting. There is a mystery and a very light romance in the plot.

Also Erin, I think it was you who recommended Ranger's Apprentice to me. We started lisening to the first one and my 13 yob is scribbling away at his narration of it. This is the first time he hasn't been uncomfortable with writing! Just wanted to thank you.

I don't know if it has been mentioned so far but my 14 is reading
The Count of Montecristo and enjoying it.
What about The Prisoner of Zenda and it sequels - Librivox has a good reading of these.
My son just finished reading The Hunger Games trilogy. I don't know what you would think about that one though...

Thanks for your list many my boys already love, so hoping I can source the others. Ender's Game has arrived from the library would Garrett give any caveats? Xavier is keen to read and I haven't interest to pre-read at the moment.

I've been looking for a 2nd hand copy of count of Montecristo for years. I have very fond memories of reading that in my school library during the lunch hours of Grade 10. Literally one of the BEST books I ever read.
