It looks like the IHM Conference is on our anniversary so that weekend wouldn't work if it were chosen, but I am in NoVA, would love to come and would like to help in some way. (Not driving is the big obstacle to a lot of volunteer opportunities, but not sure if that would matter here -- DH is often available to drive and take the boys if necessary.)

After some discussion on this thread, Elizabeth and I are throwing the idea around of a 4 Real conference for the summer. Someone (or several people) would need to step up and take the job of coordinator. I'd be happy to lend advice (since I have put on a a conference) and of course I would come but that's all I can offer. |

This is a great idea - too bad it's going to end up on the other side of the country. Ironically we'll be in the DC area in early July if that's when it ends up happening (hope, hope ). I am also happy, like Michele, to lend ideas/advise having done a few conferences as well. I think simple is best - so stick to the basics and don't have all the extras. It is so much easier that way.
And since Elizabeth and Kim are going to be speaking at the Rocky Mountain Catholic Home Educators Conference in Denver in June, I figure that can be the western version of a 4 Real conference this year. I posted the details and website links here. Think about joining us!

Well, since I'll be back East in June (SC and NC) and back here in July to host an exchange student from France -- looks live I'll miss the East and West Coast 4real conferences -- sometimes family obligations really mess things up, huh?
Well, at least y'all will have my prayers (and I'm helping organize the Denver one anyway) -- maybe we could start doing an annual or biannual conference and if we schedule it early enough, I could go almost anywhere ....

Yay! I'll be there, and I'll do whatever I can to help. Where do I sign up?
I think using forum titles as topics for talks is a great idea! As for vendors, here is my wish list:
Our Father's House/Family Centered Press
By Way of the Family
Weed Hill Books (are they still in business? I just tried to find them, and got a message saying "this web site coming soon")
Emmanuel Books
CHC
FUN Books

Okay, from a completely selfish point of view, this would be great for me, a NOVA girl!!
"What would we like to see?" Hmm...
- I second all of Theresa's and Wendy's suggestions.
- The "keep it simple" method does seem wise due to time.
- Right Start math? -- interested in seeing more.
- A "baby steps" or the "introductory talk" for people like me: read the book, new to homeschooling. And, for that matter, there might be people interested in this kind of conference who haven't read Elizabeth's book...yet!
- I never tire of hearing Art Bennett (and his lovely wife Laraine!)
Definitely willing to help.

OK so there's definitely interest. If this is going to happen the first thing that needs to be secured is a venue. A church hall would probably be the best bet (and least expensive). This is really why a NOVA person needs to be heading things up because it will need to be someone in the area who can check things out.
It needs to be done soon if it's going to happen because places fill up quickly and as far as churches go summer is weddings time.
My suggestions for a date are:
July 13 & 14 or 27 & 28
OR if it's only going to be a one day deal then the 14th or 28th.
Once these things are decided (venue and date) you then need to contact the other vendors ASAP to see if they will come. Workshops etc. can be worked out later but these things can't wait if it's going to happen.
Anyone in NOVA willing to start calling around?

I think maryan has a potential venue. I can't be there July 14th (we'll be in jacksonville florida) or the 28th (we'll be on Long Island, NY). But don't feel like I need to be there. My feelings totally will not be hurt if I miss it.

But of course we all WANT you to be there and I can do any weekend in July so it doesn't matter to me. Most likely the availability of the venue will be the deciding factor.

Oh no, Elizabeth! IMHO, even though your feelings won't be hurt, I think you are vital to a NOVA 4Real conference! Are there weekends in July that do work for you?

I might be able to attend. I'm in NJ which is not that far. I would certainly LOVE to attend but my husband has such bad work hours and stuff.
I'm not Catholic by the way, if that information is important for some reason.
I think it is a really nice idea.

We're thinking something simple. A church hall with a place for a few vendors and some workshops? On the same weekend as IHM or maybe sometime in July?
Oh and it would be in northern Virginia.

Oh, Michele! that sounds great! Dh is still job-hunting so I'm not sure where we'll end up, but Va, WV, Md or Pa are our hopeful choices and we hope to be moved by June. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I'm interested. So many conferences are driven by more traditional schooling methods. I end up bypassing almost all the curriculum and many of the speakers because we just don't school that way. I would jump at the chance to attend a conference where everything was CM related!
I'd love it if some of the more experienced moms here would be willing to do some talks in areas where they are experts?
I think a full weekend is harder for those of us who have several hours to drive than a one day conference. I've been knocking around the idea of attending the IHM, MI or PA conference (all a drive for me) but I'm overwhelmed at the thought of leaving my family for an entire weekend, plus 5-6 hrs drive each way.

I have had the exact same experience. That is why I am so excited about this one!I will be able to learn something useful from ALL of the talks!

I feel just the opposite. I will need to drive 8-10 hours so I am hoping for a longer conference to make it more worth the 2 days of driving, motels, etc.
I also think we should make name tags with our little forum avatars on them so we will recognize each other right off the bat!
btw: I finally learned how to break up quotes into pieces to respond to each part!Go me!

Oh, it definitely needs to be a date when Elizabeth can be there -- and MacBeth, and Michele, and Jenn, you could do a talk on the liturgical year? Maybe with Alice, who could also bring notebooking samples...
I don't know if I'd be much help finding a venue (we're not quite in NOVA), but I'm willing to call vendors, haul boxes of books to the conference (if any vendor needed a shipping point), offer my kids' bedrooms to out-of-towners...

I think Maryan has a pretty good venue in mind. She's working on details. And Mary Ellen is working on more details...so...details soon.
