Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you have a favorite shrine or apparition? I would love to hear about it. I have a little campfire going and some marshmallows and plenty of sticks to share. (Although it is pretty hard to get the marshmallows away from me!)

Our Lady of Charity and here. She is patroness of Cuba. My first spoon saint (ala Alice) was of this image, and I have a small holy card framed in gold and hung on a wall in our dining room. In the churches in Miami there are often large statues of Our Lady of Charity above a stormy sea with the three men on a boat. Some day maybe we'll have our own small statue here at home. I love going to my grandmother's parish in Miami each year and greeting our Lady. She is an old friend, and I have visited her there for many years now.

Well I love Our Lady of Fatima, but I would have to say OL of Lourdes!   We were blessed to go there a few years back and I will forever hold those memories of the baths and the procession in my heart.
This is a great thread it is hard for me to decide....

There are so many literally awesome Marian apparition sites! We've been fortunate to be able to see many of the biggies -- Lourdes, Fatima, LaSalette, Knock and (if it's ever ok'd by the Church) Medjugorje. My favorite is probably Knock -- it's an absolutely beautiful tableau that was created with Mary, Joseph and John...and the message was so uplifting for those poor Irish in the midst of a potato famine and with many of the villagers with relatives scattered trying to make a living ... add a dismal, dreary, rainy evening ... talk about DRAMA!

So will you pass me a marshmallow, Helen? It's cold here so a fire would be nice.

I have always been partcial to Our Lady of Czestachowa because of my Polish heritage. Especially after John Paul II became pope there was a worldwide renewed awareness of Our Lady under this title because of his devotion to her.

I also feel very close to Our Lady of La Leche. This began after the birth of my first son. The connection to Mary as the patroness of a safe birth and breastfeeding was very comforting to me. This is also the oldest shrine to Our Lady in the United States which I find fascinating. The other shrine in contention for that title of oldest in US - La Conquistadora, in Santa Fe, is another one that is special to me. The disctinctions being one is the oldest shrine one is the oldest Madonna in US. Because Jenn recently told me about a wonderful book on her (which I read last month) I've had a renewed interest in her as well. I lived in Santa Fe for a few years in junior high. Our Lady's shrine is at the Cathedral. I attended the Cathedral school. I love all things associated with the southwest and the amazing Catholic faith and devotion to Our Lady of the Conquest in that region is beautiful.

My favourite shrine to visit (if I ever could) would be The Holy House of Loreto, I always have a constant supply of blessed oil from this shrine and so my heart feels connected to it because of that. The most awesome events of human history and salvation took place in that humble home.

My favourite apparition would be Our Lady of Guadalupe appearing to Juan Diego - how can I explain my feelings? Where do I start? I suppose to read The Handbook of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of Guadalupe: and the Conquest of Darkness could explain my feelings!

Don't get me going on marshmellows Helen, I'd think we'd be fighting over that pack!

Fine! I'm bringing my own bag of marshmallows!

I have a few favorite Marian devotions that I love. The first two are influenced by my mother's own love and her traditions.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor in New Orleans. She is the patroness of Louisiana and New Orleans... My mother and I just had a great conversation about St. Angela, the Ursulines, OL Prompt Succor and New Orleans.

At the top of the Spanish Steps in Rome is a Church and convent, and you can visit the image of Mater Admirabilis. My mother attended a school in Louisians run by the Madames of the Sacred Heart, and this image, "the pink Madonna" was their special devotion. You can get some images here. My mother had a small statue of the image. Dh and I visited when in Rome in 2002, and it is more beautiful in real life.

It is hard to narrow down favorites. These came to my head immediately, but there are others.

My favorite visions are Our Lady of La Salette and Our Lady of Guadalupe. OLG is the one I use most in prayer, repeating her words over and over to ask her to give me inner peace.

Jennifer -- did your mom attend the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau? I grew up in a little town not far from there and knew a few girls who attended. I was fortunate enough to attend one of their graduation ceremonies -- just beautiful from what I remember (from 1979!)

I was not familiar with the image of Mary you referred to (quoted above) and it is just beautiful. .I think it's my new favorite!

Yes, Grand Coteau. She was born in New Orleans, raised in Houston, went to boarding school there for a few years. My mother didn't end up graduating from there, but has very fond memories of her years there.
It's sad how the nuns went a little crazy in the 60s, and no more habits and such.

They had a large life-size statue in the hall that the students and nuns would "courtsey" when passing.

Mary,
I'm also very partial to Our Lady of Czestochowa and to Our Lady of La Leche. My husband I visited the Shrine and said the prayer you linked above the month before Karoline was conceived. And everyone in the birthing room knew that they were not even to mention removing the medal our Our Lady of La Leche that you sent me. It was like having my mother (my Blessed Mother)with me in labor.

We visited the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche in January. It was an unbelievably moving experience. The tears started flowing and I didn't think I was going to be able to leave!

On a funny note, as we were walking outside there was a stork in the water. That just cracked us up that there'd be a stork there. The curator also told us that a red-tailed eagle (I think that's what it was) came to the shrine, laid its eggs, and she and the babies left--she had a safe delivery!

The only shrine I've ever visited is Walsingham. I went there while on my journey to the Church and have been there several times since. It's a beautiful, peaceful place.

Academy of the Sacred Heart My niece attended this school.

If you click here it will tell you about the Miracle at Grand Coteau of St. John Berchmanns appearing to a young novice at the convent.

I know there is a statue of St. John Berchmanns at the school.

Grand Coteau is where I go each autumn on retreat. It is beautiful. Simply beautiful.

Trent Angers has a beautiful book about Grand Coteau, the history, the church, the academy, the apparition, the miracle, etc. in his book Grand Coteau ~ The Holy Land of South Louisiana . Last year I gave copies of the book to all the god-parents.

How interesting, Cay. When I graduated from college I taught middle school in the Archdiocese of San Antonio at St. John Berchmans. I never knew anything about him.

I suspected the marshmallows might be all gone by now so I brought another bag - along with graham crackers and Hershey bars. S'mores anyone?

My favorite apparitions would be Our Lady of Guadalupe and that of St. Catherine Labouré and the Miraculous Medal. I have never visited either shrine (my oldest son has seen Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico) but hope to be able to someday.

Oh I can relate to this so well. I always wear a miraculous medal during labor and my husbands knows not to let anyone remove it from me. Actually I wear my medal all the time (except in the shower). I recently found a small beautiful Miraculous Medal at Alice C's Gardens of Grace that I love. I bought two and plan to get more and make necklaces for my girls. They're small enough for young girls but not so small that I can't wear one too. I am hoping they will become something the girls wear for years to come.

As I am sure most of you know the Miraculous Medal is very powerful. St. Maximilian Kolbe made wearing it and giving it away an integral part of his movement. He called the Miraculous Medal "a 'bullet' with which the faithful soldier hits the enemy, that is evil, and thus rescues souls."

I have a treasured medal too - it is a locket - my mother bought it at a half price jewelery sale and I have treasured it ever since - I keep my Agnus Dei Wax inside and I hope to get ones for my girls, maybe as a confirmation present. Of course simple medals a just as good sacramentally but I just love the idea of something treasured and something that will be passed on down through the family once I am gone, it would have alot of faith, hope and love still clinging to it and that is a beautiful thought too.

It has recently had repairs done to it, pawed by feeding babies....

You are so right there, a thread dedicated to it would be a great place to share it's many wonders and graces and I'm sure it could rival any thread so far for creating goosebumps!

I remember a lovely priest interviewed by Mother Angelica called it the 'Golden Retreiver' because he had started a mission of passing out a million gold plated miraculous medals in China - you can imagine why it was named so well!
