Thanks everyone for the information. I am going to start off simply by downloading from the library site to CD and listening to these books. I will keep educating myself so that when budget allows it I can think of some kind of MP3.

Something to keep in mind about various players is whether it has a harddrive or whether the audio is stored in another format (forget what it's called -- remember, I'm the tech dinosaur of our family). Anyhow, my husband prefers the non-harddrive versions (ipod tends toward, though is not exclusively, harddrives; other brands use harddrives too). He says there are too many moving parts re: harddrives and that the technology for the non-harddrive kind is less likely to result in an unuseable player if it gets dropped, damaged, or something else along those lines.

What Kelly said.
The bottom line there is that my PPC has more battery life than Libby's iPod since her iPod has a harddrive, and my PPC uses a chip.
I do like having both. I can't live without my PPC anymore. It does everything my computer does, but it fits in my purse. I can even use it to record a quick reminder while I'm driving. We got one for Libby, but she gave it to her brother, and prefers the iPod. Go figure.

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents on this topic. I use a Creative Zen Micro mp3 player and oldest ds has an Ipod. If you use PCs you can use either Ipod (Apple) or other mp3 players, but if you have Mac you can only use Ipod as far as I know.
I can sync music/books, etc. through the software that came with my player or through Windows Media Player, which is free with Windows.
Our library has tons of downloadable audiobooks and music now, but it's only compatible with Windows, so check on that if that is a consideration. I've even downloaded some of the "teach yourself Spanish" programs to try out.
Lastly, one problem with all of these is battery life. Mine claimed 14 hours, which sounded great, until I found out that that would only be if you had the screen light turned off and listened to it straight through without changing songs or turning off/on or adding/subtracting songs. Apparently loading songs/books and accessing the menu really cuts into the battery life. I think I get about 3-4 hours max with the type of use I do.
Dh was able to find a replacement battery kit for ds's Ipod at Microcenter MUCH cheaper than what Apple charges to replace it, and it comes with a video on exactly how to do the replacement.

Do they carry many children's books? I'm asking because I searched for "Laura Ingalls Wilder" under author and nothing came up. Am I doing something wrong?

We have 2 ipods, an ipod nano and ipod mini. The Ipod Nano is dh and I's. The mini i will let the girls use for audio stories. Also, dd's have a chance to win an ipod nano if they have read the most books in the age group. This is held at the library. If one wins, then they both will each have their own ipod and we can download audio stories.
Here is one place that has free audio stories.
www.storynory.com
We've listened to a few stories from there and i like the voices. The girls like it too.

When we downlaod from audible.com, I burn the books to CD and then sync them to Quinn's mp3. That way I have them for use in the car or to store for the other kids later. His mp3 will hold 1000 songs and currently he has about 20 songs, a Cat Chat CD and three full books stored on it and I don't think it's full. He has dress rehearsals for his upcoming play for three hours every night this week--he pops in his earphones and gets a healthy dose of Frances Hodgson Burnett rather than conversation with the teens in the play, he's happy, and I'm definitely happy!
