I read about Elizabeth using Ipods for her children and I'm so curious. Do any of you do the same? I have been homeschooling for the 1st time my 4th grade, 6th grade and K sons. How could I use Ipods with them? Where do I find school related materials to download?
ANY Ipod-for-school andive or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We use Audible to download children's books (adult books, too!). We just have one ipod, but I hope to have one for each girl on an upcoming road trip. We also get books on cd from the library and I transfer them to my ipod (I delete them after I listen).

Thanks for bringing this up. I also read about Elizabeth doing this and was curious. I was also wondering the difference between ipod and mp3 players. Does Audible have a good selection?

Audible has a huge selection, especially classics. It also has some junk, so be careful. Books on CD from the library can also be loaded onto the iPod so you don't have to fuss with CDs.
We have used a Pocket PC with mp3 player for years (it is still my favorite, as I can get work done, keep contacts, etc. all on the same device), and now Libby has an 30 gig iPod both for audio books and for music. We got the huge memory because whole concerti and symphonies are huge files . It wouldn't do to ask her to chose which one she might want to listen that day .

Thanks MacBeth and all,
I was floored by all AUDIBLE had to offer.
We are new to IPods and have Nanos, told they hold 500 songs. What's the formula for knowing how much space I have to load a book? Can I add something that goes for 5 hours? Do I have the room?

Allison, do you have an ipod already or are you just getting in the market to buy one? If so, you really don't need to get an ipod; many, if not most, mp3 players will work for this, and frequently at a lower cost than ipods.
A 1 gig player will hold lots of audio. One child here won a ipod shuffle, which holds a lot less than a gig, and it holds whole books on it. I don't know if they've tried to max out the player, but hours of audiobooks are on it. Of course, with the shuffle, he just plays the files in order as if he was reading a book. When he turns it back on, it is in the spot he left off. And, that's a real basic player, one that doesn't have a display or much by the way of controls.
I am pretty sure that your player tells you when you've maxed out the space on it. Of course, I don't fiddle with those things myself. The few times I tried to use one of the ones we have here (just to borrow it for a brief while), it was headache after headache for me. I'm really turning into a dinosaur when it comes to technology; but, the guys here zip right a long with no problems. They seem to know when they've hit their limit on what they can load up, etc. So, I'm assuming when as you load it on, you somehow know how much room you have left.
Happy Listening!

You should have. I have a 1 gig chip in my PPC, and I can put several books on it, depending on the quality of the file. With the PPC, if I run out of space, I can put part of a book on it, and save the rest for later. I don't know if you can do that with the iPod nano.

There are also some 2gig and 4gig chips out there, which are now quite reasonably priced... and I have noticed some MP3 players which have 60 gig of memory ...
Mum mentioned she got my brother and sisters MP4 players, but I was way too out of the loop to get the difference
MOST downloads will tell you how big they are BTW, so all you have to do is figure out how much room on your player.

Please would you educate me - I am behind the times:
- what is the difference between an iPod and an MP3 player?
- can you listen to an iPod without headphones eg in the car?
- how do you load from a cd onto an iPod?
- all I see around are the iPod Nanos. Is there a regular non video iPod - is this the Shuffle and is it the best to get?
Thanks for your help. I look at Audible longingly - but do not understand what technology I need to download stuff.

An iPod is a brand, made by apple, of an audio player. An mp3 player is a more generic name for many of the other brands.
You can get one of several attachments to the iPod that'll make it work in the car--one sends a radio signal, and one uses a wire to the cassette player. Some cars are iPod-ready.
You load all audio, whether downloads or CD, via the computer. You'll need a program called itunes.
I'm not up on nanos and shuffles because we needed something bigger. Check Apple's website.

I got my dh an Ipod Nano a year ago. It does not have video capability, only music. I think you can load photos on, but they would be awfully small.
There is a newly designed shuffle which I know nothing about. But the older shuffle does not have any kind of screen, ie, it is quite difficult to select specific tracks of a CD. With the Nano, you can see the titles and select from menus.
My husband really likes his Nano.

OK, more questions. What do you do after you have listened to the book(s) and you need to make room for more books. Do you erase it into neverland? Especially after paying money at Audible for it. Sorry, I am not very techno savy. I guess I can officialy say I am getting old I think that is one of the signs.

Do most PPC's have the MP3 player ability? I am in the market and wondered what you ladies recommend. I was looking at the palm tungsten(is that considered a PPC?). Can you tell me what you have and why you like it?
Now back to the kids: I like the idea of an ipod for school, the price is huge! What are other name brands you trust, like, and are more affordable?
Thank you!!

the books are downloaded from audible to our PC and then to the iPods. So, we can take them off the iPods, but still have them stored on the pc.

Thanks MacBeth and everyone else for the information.
I have a couple more questions:
- Is an iPod seen as preferable to any other device?
- Will Itunes work with any MP3 player or only on an iPod?
- does the Itunes software come with the MP3 or does it have to be purchased separately
Can anyone recommend a good iPod or MP3 - mainly for books but also able to download music. I am not looking for trendy bells and whistles - but something that will have enough memory and ok for the kids to use.
Thanks for all the tech help - the next challenge will be the (dare I say it) blog one.... my kids sent me an email saying "Welcome to the 21st Century!"!!!!

Yes, they all do. A PPC uses Windows for pocket PC, but Palm has it's own OS. I am not sure if Palm has something very like mp3, but I would not be surprised.

If you need room on your PC, the books are stored on Audible in "your library" . You can reload them at any time.

iTunes comes with the iPod. I do not know if it is compatible with other players. Maybe iPod clones?
The big "bell and whistle" is space, and iPods have lots of it. Also, from what I have heard, they are more reliable than some cheaper mp3 players (though this might have changed). If I were buying an iPod (and I have) I would get as much space as I could afford, as the kids will fill it amazingly quickly. Libby has used about 1/3 of her space on a 30 gig iPod. She has never taken anything off it, she tells me now. Hm...but she is the only one who uses it. If all the kids shared it, it would probably have more books on it.

Marilyn, what kind of computer do you have? We use a Mac and the a lot of the cheaper MP3 are not compatible with Macs. We discovered it after getting my dd an 50 or 60.00 MP3 and and then discovered that we couldn't use it on our Mac. So we ended up with an Ipod.

I wish I could add more insight to the "hardware" discussion but it sounds like there are many more knowledgeable than I already doing that
My dh bought me a Zune for Christmas - its an mp3 player from Microsoft. I have no idea how it differs from an iPod - I like it but am still learning.
The reason for my post...
I wanted to post a few more ideas about sources for downloads.
I have not tried Audible yet (but it looks great!)
And I too will copy CDs from the library and delete when finished.
Here are a few other things I've found:
Magnifikid now produces a show called Magnifikid Minute that talks about the readings for the week and other topics mentioned in the kids' publication Magnifikid! My 5yo and 2yo are listing to this show right now. Its a bit over their heads but they seem like it just the same.
Also, I enjoy listening to archived episodes of Catholic Answers Live. This link is for their calendar of shows, guests and topics. If you go look at previous months in the calendar and click on the show, there is usually an mp3 file you download (as well as an audio file you can listen to on yoru computer - if you don't have an iPod, yet.). I've heard great discussion from Scott Hahn and many others. Just tonight I listed to a show with Scott Hahn called "The Mass in Slow Motion". Its a series (I didn't know that so I need to go back and download the other episodes and listen to those as well -- here are the dates if you are interested in listening as well...
April 17, June 7, Aug 2, Oct 4 -- all 2006).
And (just now) I just found the search feature - in the right hand menu - for that calendar and found 25+ shows with Scott Hahn... wow. I love this resource!
One last resource or idea for material - my library subscribes to electronic audio libraries for their patrons. Overdrive is one service and NetLibrary is the other. The easiest thing to do it check with your librarian or the library website. If your library doesn't subscribe, check other libraries. For instance, I have a library card for the Cleveland library even though I am hours away. (The only residence requirement they have is that I live in Ohio, which I do.) With my library card and their website, I am able to download books (and music! - mostly classical, but some kids stuff, too) without ever having to visit a Cleveland library branch.
If you have other ideas, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks for all the great ideas that are shared here.
Erica
