Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Wow... I must be really old-fashioned, too.

We don't allow any gaming devices. I didn't have them growing up, either. My oldest has such an addictive personality about reading that I'm sure it would be negative for him to ever have a gameboy or anything. Lately I've let him play a building houses game I got thinking it was a house-design software. He's always sneaking on the computer in the early morning hours now and will play it for hours, zoned out... so the (kids') computer cord is being hid in the closet tonight.

I've seen far too many of his peers act like zombies on the games, too... I'd rather Jacob zone out reading Redwall books or whatever than those games.

I don't mean to offend anyone who has these in their home but I just know that with Jacob's personality they would not be good for this house.

The NY Times April 24, 2005 issue of the Magazine featured an article by Steven Johnson which includes references to Flynn's research...but the Times is quick to add that there is no evidence to back up the idea video games or screen time is at all the reason for an increase in IQ. It's all worth discussing, but the skeptic in me is muttering post hoc ergo propter hoc?

The video/not to video question is such an interesting one, and I'm really enjoying the whole discussion, and getting those all-important glimpses into everyone's home .

FWIW, we have a Game Boy (used occasionally), a game cube (hasn't been used for about two months), several computers with games (used mostly for e-mail and school work), cable TV, DVD, VHS, LD...you name it. But these things are not on regulary, and I know my kids play outside all the time.

If you look at Flynn's original work, now some 25 years old, his study began before video games were a major influence. I suspect that there may be another answer, or, more likely, a confluence of factors, to explain increasing IQs in industrial nations.
