Wow, I live in the area and I had never heard of that stuff!
I'll be praying for you and a solution.

I don't know if the information you found was recent; but, a while back I found some out some sad things about things that happened there. The religious order that it concerned is no longer in that diocese. They are now in South America, I think. It seemed, from what I read, that controversy followed certain members of the order (from prior to their work at St. Gregory's).

Hi Molly,
I'm praying for you and your situation as well! As Mary Ann said, my husband teaches at St. Gregory's and our oldest will go there next year . . . much as I would like to keep him at home, he has lived the last 6 years in anticipation of the day when he can attend . . and he will board there even though we only live 15 minutes away from the school.
As to the "can of worms" posts . . .
No situation is perfect, but I would like to put your ladies' minds and hearts at ease about St. Gregory's. Not only is Father Longua a great chaplain, the current headmaster is someone for whom I have the greatest respect. HE UNDERSTANDS BOYS!! The school tries to model their discipline on the philosophy of St. John Bosco, (aniticpate problems and don't leave open the door to them, so in other words act instead of react; love the boys). The academic part of the school is based loosely on John Senior's idea about first hand knowledge of subjects. (very Charolotte Mason-ish; poetic knowledge) However, almost all the teachers there are graduates of TAC and a few are from Christendom. Music plays a really big part in the day-to-day life of the school. The boys learn chant and many many folk songs. The idea is that you can't just take away the bad music and culture --you have to give them an alternative. They also play soccer and rugby with the express purpose of developing character. From a school of 60 boys they field competitive teams who play the other local high schools.
I am constantly impressed at the growth in the boys from freshman to senior year.
Given all that, it is still not a perfect fit for everyone. It is a boarding school and the boys have to learn to live with many different personalities.
As to the yucky stuff you find on the Internet: There was a case pending against an order of priests that is no longer in the country, and St. Gregory's and the Priestly Fraternity were named as co-defendants since the alleged misconduct took place while the members of that order resided at the school. However the criminal charges were dropped very soon after first being filed, and the civil suit postponed and postponed postponed, and then finally settled. Neither of those things are reported on the Internet. Please keep in mind as well that these alleged events took place more than 7 years ago! (It was in fact before the time my husband worked there.) It is somewhat perplexing to me that those that continue to spread the stories haven't found something better to do with their time in all these years.
I hope you find the right life-course for your son Molly. Feel free to contact St. Greg's for printed material. You can visit the official website here:
http://www.saintgregorysacademy.com/ (created and maintained by the assistant chaplain Father Fryar - a lovely priest from Australia - he's the one who took the first round of Catholic Mosaic into Australia for us).
Please feel free to ask me any questions about it as well.
God bless
Margot

Margot, thank you for your gracious reply wrt St gregory's - its good to discuss these things and to know that concerns are being/were addressed.
Molly, you are in my prayers. Its never easy, really - we are having lots of discussions right now with a younger teen sons, concerning a girl from Youth Group/Youth Choir at our church.

Dear Margot,
Thank you for taking time to post your information about St. Gregory's. It means a lot to me as you are right there and your knowledge is firsthand. That you are going to send your own son there speaks of the trust you have in those who are charged with the care of the boys. I appreciate your insights !
Blessings,
Kym
