Thanks for the ideas. We do have a small serpent, but I don't know if it will get confused with the small desert animal. I thought if I use wooden figures, maybe I could use a plain block. I was wondering aloud last night about this and my dh said, "ooh scary."

Here are the Patterns for Wooden Holy Week Figures from Our Father's House in case anyone is interested in this as another option for inexpensive figures.
Scroll about 1/4 of the way down. Figures are about 4-5" tall. There are 57 figures.
She explains how you can make these out of wood OR cardboard/paper, color (or not) and then laminate. Easy but time-consuming.
There are also complete scripts for each day of Holy Week. Palm Sunday - Easter Sunday.

I am making a set of clothespin apostles and want to put their symbols on them somehow (still working on that part). I have the symbols for all of them...except Judas. What do you suggest for him? Or should I just leave him blank? Any ideas?

I think in the Resurrection Eggs, someone had "30 pieces of silver." (3 dimes)
So maybe a bag of money????

Yeah, in Moira's 6-9 Album, I believe she suggests tying a small bag around Judas' waist for the bag of money...so I'd go with that.
My clothespin apostles are all pretty anonymous looking with grey, tan, and brown felt "clothes". I like the idea of the symbols. Would you share the symbols with us here (or on your blog)?

I'm going to throw out another idea. I have this marvelous book called Making New Testament Toys by Margaret Hutchings. She has the twelve apostles, made from the UK Smartie tubes (I'm trying to figure out what I can use to substitute). Each figure has felt covering, and little felt hands and symbols attached to each apostle. It requires a little bit of stitching, but these are wonderful versions -- faces, symbols, etc. I think some of the ideas could be adapted to the clothespin versions. The instructions are long, but for a brief synopsis:
Tiny keys for Peter (such as from old jewelry boxes (or made from strong wire). Sew on with thread
Two popsicle sticks for Andrew, glue together as an X, stitch to his back, and add a yarn loop that comes over the shoulders so it looks like he's carrying his cross.
Piece of net and cardstock to make cut out fish for James. Cut out fish, decorate, tie together in a bunch, put fish net around his shoulders.
Another clothespin doll covered with blue felt to look like Mary. Head should be covered, add tiny pearl beads to look like tears, and add an arm or hand around Mary and put her close to St. John.
Philip requires a little basket...her suggestion is a large button and knit to make a basket, then add bread colored felt inside.
Bartholomew needs a twig that will stand over his head, with green felt leaves, his hands positioned to look like he's praying.
Matthew needs two blazer buttons, drinking straw and gold and/or silver sequins. Cut 1 1/2 inches of straw, use this as the scale, tying the shanks of the buttons and adding sequins for the coins.
Thomas needs two or three nails sewn in front ofr his figure.
James the Less needs two matchsticks, cut and glue together in shape of a small cross and put in his hands (his mother was at the crucifixion).
Trace a small map of Galilee on brown cardstock and mark in Cana, put in front in his hands.
Judas Iscariot needs brown felt made into a little bag filled with silve sequins.
Jude Thaddeus needs a scroll, made from the rest of the drinking straw, two pieces 1 3/4 inches, paper that looks like parchment or vellum in 1 1/2 x 3 inches.

Can someone help me out here. I am just starting to get things together for my CGS program. I have a partial Mass set, but it is missing some of the pieces which would be necessary for the lessons. I thought about buying individual pieces, but I really, really like the look of the mini Mass set from Catholic Montessori. Of course, it's the VERY expensive one. But it does have everything included in the nice wooden box which doubles as the altar. I like that everything is included. I can wait and save for it, but I would really like to know if any of you have it and what you think of it. I like the idea of being able to start with a complete Mass kit, then I'd have the time to start crafting my way through the other pieces.
Also, I'm going to use Moira's 3-6 manual with my 6 year old since we're just starting, and I feel he's missed something key in his formation. He's just not connecting. I really feel this program is an answer to prayers! I have a 2 year old and a 10 year old too! How do you guys handle that? I know the 10 year old will love the presentations and participate - no worries there - but the 2 year old!  How do you guys handle the 2's with this. I think he'll just sit in my lap, but I'm wondering if you all have some pointers.
