Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Jen, I noticed that you have older children. Would you mind sharing how you've made Seton work for you with them in particular?

***People often do a double take when they hear that we are studying butterflies, Latin, Sign Language, etc. I have heard on more than one occasion, "But that is not part of Seton's program." I guess I see Seton as a tool to help me educate my children while pulling in other things that I want them to learn or do. I don't see myself as schooling in a box and so far we have had a large part of our day free for other activities. I don't see a pre-packaged curriculum as boxing me in, but more as helping me out and giving me time to spend playing outside with my children. ***

Christine, your hs sounds fun. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Books,

Well, we started out fully enrolled with Seton 5 years ago. I went completely away the 2nd year and just couldn't pull effective lesson plans together. We read a ton of books and did tons of nature study (fly fished every day of the season!)but grammar and math suffered. Since then we've used them in various ways. I think I've found the perfect mix this year.
We're partially enrolled. I use some of their books for classes we are not enrolled in, and we have time to do our own thing in many classes.
Our oldest is not doing Seton. He is enrolled with the American School. There is just no way he could handle Seton, he's a hands on boy and I just want to get him through high school, so that seemed to be the easiest option. I'm spending this year working on his heart and soul, time seems short as he approaches his 16th birthday.
Our 7th,5th, and 2nd graders are enrolled in a couple classes each. My 7th grader will probably do Seton in high school. They are enrolled in:

7th- 5th grade english (he's never grasped grammar well, so I enrolled to get their plans and support)
8th grade math- so I could call for help. And they will make him write out how he got the right answer.
7th grade reading- they have good books, and in 7th grade the book reports change from narrative to more of a evaluating type paper, that they will grade (the critisicm will arrive from someone other than me.)

5th- MCP 5th grade Math
     5th grade Science
My 5th grader has a lot of memory problems due to his seizure medicine, so if we ever fully enroll again I would use special services for him, but he does enjoy science and math. I let him use a multiplication chart for math. In science it seems like its a lot of memorization for the tests and we want to work on that this year so I thought at least he loves the subject. He really wants to be like his 2 older brothers and mail papers in, so I picked easy classes for him. The rest of the books I use for him are more CM, and I still have to accomodate him for narrations.

My 2nd grader is enrolled for 2nd grade reading and 3rd grade math. She loves math, and hates reading. She does like the Seton readers, so I thought it would be a time saver to have the narration questions from the plans.

When we were fully enrolled (too cost prohibitive this year) we had the best time, we knew when we closed the books that we had covered the basics and that we could freely follow whatever rabbit trails thay came up with.
Even if I did fully enroll I wouldn't send work in to be graded in many subjects and I wouldn't use many of their books until the kids were in jr high and up. I've always changed the lesson plans to fit my children, and look at them as the time saver they are. We did many pages orally when the boys were younger, and never did "busy" work. Seton is always updating the plans and books, and have been more than helpful to me on the phone. They encourage combining kids in classes, and have no problem at all if cut assignments out of the plan. They know that you know your child the best. I hope that helps explain things.

Jen
