Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Random History
That is for when we are not doing history within a unit study.
I will get our medieval stuff together for you!

I checked out Superboy's timeline book- it is so neat! Does his timeline book have all of the dates filled in, so when he studies a period, he opens and writes on that page? If so, how did you divide the dates (how many years do you put on a page?)
I really like the idea of random history, because even when we are attempting to study chronologically, inevitably, something comes up that pertains to another period.

Thanks!!!!

Stacy,
Thanks! I'll tell ds you liked it.
We bought our timeline book online through Homeschool in the Woods.
here
It is beautifully done and has all the dates and the time period per page varies, with more space during modern times than ancient, which makes sense, really. It is pricey, but so lovely that ds really enjoys working in it, and a nice change from the homemade notebooks.

He also has a history notebook which is a three ring binder with page protectors in which he puts his notebook pages that he makes for each topic he studies. For instance, when he studied Robin Hood, he made a wanted poster and put that in. When he did knights, he put a page with a picture of a suit of armor and labeled all the parts. Different stuff each time-whatever piques his interest. This notebook is arranged chronologically, but not divided up into time periods yet. I'm sure as he adds more to it we will need to divide it up to find things more conveniently. Especially since we skip around so much! I don't think I've posted pictures of that yet. Maybe I will do that soon.
Probably more than you wanted to know!

Most of our units are totally seat-of-the-pants. We start with an idea.

I agree with Sarah and Theresa ... and it's why I'm so awful at giving advice about how we "do" a unit ... I can usually only tell someone that after-the-fact, because they really do unfold as we go.

We zero in on a topic, or place or person, and we start the hunt. Keeping notes as we go is helpful for future units, rabbit trails or studies, but each one does seem to unfold with its own particular personality.

Ugh ... again, I'm so vague. Listen to the others. They're so good at step-by-step ....

This looks wonderful, Theresa!

What did you purchase from them? the CD with the printouts? or just the notebook?

What age did your son begin his book? I have been wanting to begin tmelines for awhile now, but I couldn't decide what to do/use. I think I'll start my 10 and 9 year old on these. What about a 7 year old?

Thanks!

I just bought the timeline book. I didn't want the timeline figures because I want his book to be more personalized than just sticking premade figures into the correct time slot. We get our pictues from google images, photocopies from books, websites, etc and he draws some of his own. I think it makes a more varied and interesting book that way.
If I had multiple kids doing it, I might feel differently.
I think a 7yo could do this just as well as an older child. Just expect shorter entries for each event.

Thanks to everyone for the great advice!
I do have 1 more question.........and please no eye rolling.......
After 1 year of CHC and having the lesson plan tell me what to do every minute......tell me how do you plan your day, organize your lessons. I know you don't have it written in stone and that is certainly not what I want. But a few examples of how your day is planned would be a great help!

Thanks again!

Marcie,

On Donna Young's site, she has a nice unit study planner (you click on either IBM or MAC to open it). This link explains what's on each sheet of the planner once you open it:
Donna Young's Unit Study Planner

This can help guide you in how you might do a unit study. But you only use the parts applicable to what is useful to your family. Always only use everything as a tool, and make it work for your family, because you're the boss of your homeschool!

Here is another good one. Keep scrolling below it for the worksheet:
Homeschool Mom's Unit Study planner and worksheet

    And another:

Peg's unit study worksheet

    I hope these help!

Marcie,

A lot of homeschooling moms I know, including myself, have their kids do their "seatwork", ie: math, language arts, phonics, religion: the 4r's, in the morning and then the more "hands on" subjects like history, science experiments, read alouds, occur in the afternoon when the little ones are napping. This has worked the best for me...and if you have one of "those" days, and don't get to the afternoon schooling, then you know you got the basics covered... Sometimes, I have to admit, though, I do switch it up and we reverse this if I notice a pattern of not "getting" to the fun stuff..of course, my OCD tendencies do not allow me to let go of math or grammar...we always get that done, if possible...

Prayers coming for a good planning session...I need to get started myself...nausea has sidelined me for now...hope to get myself organized in a few weeks!

Hi Marcie,

As I mentioned in the literature themes on my log, we jot down activities in paper. On one side is the curricula areas. We list possible books and activities next to each.

Each Sunday I look at our week - when can we fit activities in? This varies from week to week. I look at our planning/ideas sheet.

I make a weekly list of things to do - school stuff and housework and appts. This goes on the fridge for our referral - and helps when making my daily to do list each night. "School stuff" goes on my daily to do list!

Every morning, after breakfast and tidy and exercise, we get together to chat about our day. Sometimes we do this the night before. The kids have ideas, too. I mention what we need to do and we just get started - sometimes on rabbit trails first, sometimes on more formal work.

Our day is interspersed with music, outside play, exercise, chores, outings. But we cross off the "must dos" as we go along - or add them onto another day if we really get into something else.

I jot down what we actually did in our home in our log each night - over a cup of tea and my to do list.

HTH!

I forgot to add - when we had babies and toddlers we started each day either with an early morning walk - then come back and get into activities, with the little ones included or while they were playing/napping.

Or - we started with a read aloud while mum fed the baby - a picture book for littlies and they would play with toys while I also rerad to older ones. Then choose an activity or maths/writing and begin.
