Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Don't miss this route in flash. Just below the map on the left, click "Discover the route in flash."

Has Annecy been discussed?

The France monthly site lists Annecy as the Venice of France. It is located south of Geneva. St. Francis de Sales was baptized here and eventually became bishop and resided in this town. He founded with St. Jane de Chantal the Order of the Visitation. This order was slightly innovative for its time becuase widows and less healthy women were accepted. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, who had the vision of the Sacred Heart, was a Visitation nun. St. Margaret Mary lived in Paray Le Monial and this is where the Sacred Heart appeared to her. Paray Le Monial's Romanesque church is an excellent example of that style of architecture. (Cluny had a very famous church and monastery, but I believe it was destroyed, or at least left in ruins.)It looks like the tour is in the vicinity of Paray between stages 18 and 19.
The two other saints of the Sacred Heart are St. Claude de La Colombiere, S.J. who was St. Margaret Mary's spiritual director for 2 years (his body is in Paray) and St. John Eudes.

Oops.........here's the Cycling page at the BBC but I couldn't find anything like the 2002 site. Sorry

Gwen and all, the BBC page has now added the cool map feature for this year's race. I like it better than the flash map on the official Tour de France page.

I'm gathering up the Brittany information today, and I came across two more recipes:

Fraises Mamm Gozh (Strawberries in Red Wine with Cinnamon and Orange Zest)

1/14 cups fruity red wine
3/4 cups sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
1/2 teaspoon orange water
2 strips orange zest
1 1/2 lbs. small strawberries

Pour the wine into a saucepan and add the sugar, cinnamon, orange flower water and zest. Cook gently until it is a thick syrup. Allow the syrup to cool and remove the zest and cinnamon sticks. Halve the strawberries and place them in a serving bowl. Pour the cooled syrup over the strawberries. Leave for at least 2 hours.

From French Cuisine

Saumon Bretonne

Take a piece of salmon, remove the skin and bones and cut small cubes about one inch square; sprinkle them with salt and pepper and toss them in butter, together with a handful of fresh mushrooms. When all this is half cooked move it in the pan to the oven to finish the cooking. When cooked, drain well, put it in a serving dish, sprinkle with chopped parsley and pour over beurre meuniere.

The beurre meuniere is simply made by putting in a hot pan over the fire. In a minute or so it takes colour and becomes light brown; add a little lemon juice, and it is ready. It is essential not to let it get to the black stage, beurre noir, which is used for other kinds of dishes altogether."

From Boulestin's Round-the-Year Cookbook

Crepes are also a traditional Breton recipe - I'll post a recipe later today.

I meant to add that Fraises Mamm Gozh means "Grandmother's Strawberries" in Breton.

Yes.

Thanks, Mary. I was thinking stage 8 ran on Saturday, but Sunday works out nicely as France is playing in the World Cup final that day!
