Now that we are back into our own home, rather than a temporary rental, I am more enthusiastic about decorating for the seasons. I have been making centerpieces for the dining table and coffee table, as well as window dressings, etc. to match the seasons, liturgical and otherwise.
Anyway, I am trying to think of what to do for a lenten centerpiece. I know palms are good lenten symbols, and candles are always good (which colors?)but what else can I add to clearly say "lent" in our home?
I know you ladies will have some great ideas for me.

Theresa, we are definitely on the same wavelength here. I have been thinking about the same topic - Lenten (& Easter) decor, mainly table centerpieces. I saw this centerpiece for Palm Sunday on Pinterest yesterday and repinned it to 4 Real's board with some ideas for modifications to make it more symbolic.

I saw that palm centerpiece on Pinterest, which is what got me started thinking about it.
We have done the wreath/crown of thorns before, but I just want something different this year.

I like to keep Lenten decor very very simple. I have a purple scarf to put along a decorative high shelf in my livingroom for instance. Adding the color really gives a change to the feel of the room. Especially when contrasted with Easter.
My favorite Easter decor was the year I would pull out color pages for the kids a couple times a week during Lent.. of Easter Eggs and bunnies and butterflies and flowers.. and they colored them and I cut them out and we taped them up all over the walls of the living room for Easter. This was especially nice since even the things colored by the babies with scribbles come out nice. Since I cut them out what you see is the picture colored with the scribbles not just a scribbled paper.

Where would you get palms like that for your table? The floral department?
It is not so easy to go outside and cut palm branches around here, but I love that look!

I was thinking either a floral shop or maybe fake ones at Michael's???

What I really love are the cloche centerpieces that are big right now. An example is this one for Christmas. Trying to figure out a good lenten one.

I looked up some of my past Lenten center pieces. I'd love to do something more elaborate, but with a 2 year old....it's likely to get broken. :) Guess I've got about 2.5 weeks to figure something newish out...
Lamb and crown of thorns with cactus
I found one of this same cactus with the Pieta.
I also have some photos of a "rock" walk way we did with 40 rocks on the way to an empty tomb.

Some years we've had centerpieces that incorporate a clay saucer with sand or ashes, crown of thorns (thin elm branch wrapped round and round with its twiggy parts sticking out) and rocks... basically a desert scene. This year I'm thinking of gathering some honey locust thorns and using those somehow instead of a crown.
The Pieta as part of a centerpiece would be beautiful!

Your discussion about the pieta made me think that one might find an image that could be made into a silhouette like the silhouette of St. John Vianney that Anne did years ago for the Year of the Priest here.

On our altar I display a crown of thorns and three nails.
I am hoping to recreate some this this in Bronze this Lent.
I know that isn't not tremendously creative, but nevertheless very powerful visual reminder.

Nail Replica....how would you display these, Betsy? I've put nails in a glass bowl before, but I found a couple really large ones like the ones linked above, and am wondering how to make them stand up and be the focus, rather than just being in a dish. Any ideas?

Oh I love the palms for Palm Sunday! I'm trying to think of a way to have a centerpiece that sort of all sided so that you can see something from wherever you sit at the table. . .

I have some seed and was going to try to grow some succulents, and it occurred to me that they would make a nice Lenten centerpiece, sort of in vein with the cacti. There are a lot of succulent centerpieces and arrangements out there that might be inspiration for a Lenten version.

When I have done this it was for a one-sided view. So, I stacked some blocks up in a stair case fashion and put a purple cloth over it. I laid the crown of thorns on it and put the nails in the middle.
I am not sure how this could be done in a center pieces fashion? Maybe, just putting the crown of thorns on a nice round platter and then putting the nails across the top?

Lindsay what about nailing them into a board? it could even be a smallish cross.. the nails would be out of proportion but that would make them stand out.
