KackyK-- There is an even mix of men and women here, and they are evenly spread out in the film majors. One of the best camera ops in my class is a girl, as is the school's best cinematographer. I don't know of any Film grads going into grad school. You typically try to get in the industry as fast as you can. Experience is worth much more than a degree.
cheesehead mom-- You are right, it's very hard for a student to change their major once they're here. If that happens, they typically go to our business program. General education credits that you earn here should transfer over to another college, though.
Erica Sanchez-- You are right, we have classes through the summers here, but we get out a year early. We complete a four-year degree in three years.
Best,
Ben

We are visiting JP the Great next week. Dd19 is looking forward to it. This thread has been very helpful. I really appreciate Ben's comments.

Oh so jealous! Okay HUGE favor question...would you be up for doing a little video taping or photo taking???? My dd has this as her first choice, but we live in VA and it just won't be feasible to go visit. If she gets her finances set she'll go there and we'd be sending her off to the great unknown!
I couldn't find any virtual tour online. We would love to pictures!!!!!!
I could pm you Tin Man my email address and you could share that way or load onto youtube privately and we could view it there. If too crazy...no big deal!!!!!
Have a great visit!!!!

Thanks! We are in KS but have free airline miles, so were able to fly free, otherwise we couldn't go.
Dd is trying to decide between JP the Great and Franciscan. We have been to Steubenville twice. It is a wonderful place. The choice will probably boil down to which is the most affordable, right now that is definitely Franciscan. We felt like she ought to at least go look at JP the Great, since it sounds like it has exactly what she is looking for in a degree program...
Dd will be happy to take pics. Get me your email sometime next week and I will send them to you when we get back. She is spending the night with a student host one night and sitting in on at least two and maybe three classes. I think their finals start next week, so the admissions advisor wasn't sure which classes he would have available for her to sit in on. We will have a tour and also attend Mass. We are looking forward to it.
I will be sure to pm you when we get home.

Because of the storm coming in to our area today, we had to cancel our trip
The admissions advisor is going to call me to reschedule. I will update when we know more.

Mimi--My son ended up attending DeSales university, instead where many of the daily mass crowd are also homeschoolers. There are basically 2 Catholic universities with film programs (some have media studies and such but only 2 it seems with strictly TV/Film), JP the Great and DeSales. I think with JP the Great, as with many schools, you will find people who have had both positive and negative experiences. One family we spoke to had a negative experience stemming I think from the fact that it is a relatively new school and still (though have not checked lately) not accredited. The biggest issue there too is that they really do only 1 thing so if your child wanted to double major, minor or even transfer he/she would be at a loss--and because of accreditation there may be transfer credit issues. So as they finish accreditation, and get possibly more oversight, some of the negatives will likely go away. That's my two cents. The more I am involved in this college process the more I know that there is no perfect college (whether a good state school with great campus ministry or one of the Newman Guide schools) you just have to encourage your child to prayerfully discern where God wants them and trust. And...have them apply for any and all scholarships they can

I just wanted to add here that as of today, March 6, 2015, JP the Great is accredited by the WASC (Western Association of Schools & Colleges) Senior College and University Commission (I literally just got an email from them!) I can't tell you anything about on-campus life, but I am studying online with them for a MA in Biblical Theology, and I can tell you that they are faithful Catholics and that their theology courses are both challenging and interesting.
Mimi, prayers going up for your child's discernment!
