Bringing up your question to just mention that in the past 2 months BlogSpirit seems to go down every so often. I've had several days of sporadic service. In case that helps at all.

I'd jump into Wordpress or Typepad in a minute if I could pay for blogging.

Would you consider using blogger? I have had no problem with it, since starting to use it in March. They did have one down period on a Saturday, but it was a scheduled maintenance that users were made aware of beforehand. Their templates are fairly easy to tweak (some more so than others).
Wordpress does have a basic free service.

I'm not completely displeased with BlogSpirit to up and move. I didn't like the feel of Blogger that much. I am looking into Wordpress...but all this takes up valuable time, of which I'm already wasting.

Had to give a plug for Homeschool Journal.net. I left for greener pastures for about a week but found that, indeed, HomeSchool Journal had the greenest grass for a free blog host.
