Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Found a fascinating little documentary on Archimedes... or rather the restoration of one of his important writings. You can watch the whole thing in parts on YouTube or buy it on amazon.

Infinite Secrets: The Genius of Archimedes

We watched it after finishing the book Archimedes and the Door of Science. It was a nice companion to that. Probably best for ages 9 and up. There is one naked rear end shot of Archimedes running out of the bathtub. Nothing I'd be too ashamed to watch in front of the Blessed Mother.

Just an FYI, my computer got a virus when downloading this plug-in...wanted to warn anyone else who wanted to watch it that way.

Yikes, me too! Didn't realize it came from that until dh figured it out. Thankfully just deleting the program fixed it and no damage was done!

I'm sorry everyone!    I'm deleting my link...

I guess watch it in YouTube parts or buy it on amazon!

My 5 year old twins are recently in LOVE with "Little Latin" by ABC Catholic. The tunes are catchy and they are learning their Latin prayers all of their own initiative.

Oh! Almost forgot Popular Mechanics for Kids and the Smithsonian Networks Kids DVDs. Also Doktor Kaboom. All of these can be found at our library and are much enjoyed by both my guys.

On another subject, ds9 and I watched the first episode of Season 1 of Mythbusters this afternoon, and I was very taken by surprise to see a scene where they visit a sex shop to obtain latex suits needed for an experiment. Fortunately it went right over my son's head as I scrambled for the remote - I did NOT want to answer the "Mommy, what is a sex shop?" question - but wanted to give a heads up that previewing may be wise.

I have noticed far too many sex shop items on MythBusters and have stopped watching it and don't allow my children to watch it.      They may not know what some of those things are, and I hope they never do, but if they do find out I don't want them to associate those items with television I allowed them to watch. It's a shame good shows have to be ruined in this way.

My kids LOVE Doktor Kaboom. They saw him live and have been big fans ever since.

Another excellent series for music is Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts. Netflix has it, but we were able to get it easily from the library.

Also, I haven't actually seen it in years, but I've considered getting Wild America for our home. I LOVED that series as a child.

Just thought I would come back and add that there is a YouTube Channel with the Bernsetin Young People's Concerts

And

Amazon has most but not all of Marty Stauffer's Wild America series on Prime streaming.

Interesting. This isn't the version that we borrow from the library, which is this one, I believe, 6 DVD set. The reviews talk about reductions and lesser quality.

Has anyone gotten this version?

The reviews I read referred to how the little "commercial breaks" are in special features and not dispersed within the story, but I agree with the one reviewer that they serve as a good break in the action (these shows are a little intense to me, lots of loud music, overplayed suspense, flashy angle changes, etc...). So, I'm torn. Why the ENORMOUS price difference between the two???

Wow! Thank you to all who contributed to this thread. I was just telling dh recently that we need to build our library of shows/movies that are appropriate for the kids. Now we can get started!

If you have a Roku, I just discovered a way to beam YouTube videos to my TV with my iPhone. Maybe you all already knew this, but thought I'd share just in case.

Amazon's deal of the day is the complete 9 season set of Little House on the Prairie for $86.99. For some reason it won't let me link here. Does anyone have this set? I am tempted, but some of the reviews aren't so good.

We own the first couple of seasons of Little House on the Prairie which I have found truer to the books and less topic sensitive as the later series. But that is a great price...just beware that by the early 80s the shows dealt with many issues such as suicide, out of wedlock pregnancy etc.

For those that watch on you tube, do you watch on your computer or tablet? Is that available on tv? The thought of our family of 4-6 huddled around a 17" monitor (when there's only one seat at the desktop) to watch you tube videos is less than appealing.    I am not tech savvy so do you set it up on a laptop and then play it on your tv screen?

Here is a link to a table coordinating Story of the World with Netflix movies and documentaries. There is even a column showing whether the title is available via Instant Streaming (at least at the time the table was made).

If you have a Wii you can watch youtube from that for free. The quality isn't that great and sometimes we can't watch for that reason. Otherwise we hook an HDMI cable from the laptop to the tv to watch what is on our laptop. Amazon has these cables cheap.

We use the HDMI cable as well. :)

I *love* the living documentary series that Ruth Goodman, Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn do for BBC - such as Victorian Pharmacy, Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm... there are more but I can't remember the names of them but they're all available for free on YouTube, just look up the title. :)

Thanks to all of you ladies for your suggestions! I have so many shows to look up! :)

As an aside, has anyone seen the Reading Rainbow "On the Day You Were Born"... all bout how babies are born? It's free on Amazon Prime right now...

I'm 9 months pregnant and thought this could be great for my littles but I want to know how explicit it is...
