Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thank you for this list!

WOW! What resources!

I just want to add that it you have Netflix they have this old t.v. show on streaming called Beakman's World. I linked to their homepage but if you search for them through Netflix they have 3 or 4 seasons on streaming.

This is another science show for a little older kids, maybe 5 to 12. They cover such exciting topics as sweat and electromagnets. My kids LOVE this show and has them learning all about different scientists who make "guest appearances" and tell all about how they made their scientific discoveries.

For the Life of Christ that any age can watch, very close to the Gospels, we love The Savior, Redeemer, and the Master. Jesus' face is not shown, but His influence is. Nothing bloody or horrible. My siblings and I loved this, and now our children do, too.

I'm not sure if any of you remember Davey and Goliath. We own the whole series. The kids actually like the clay like figures. (I know it was put together by the ELCA but we appreciate the good messages.)

We also have old non animated tv shows like:

Flipper and
The Brady Bunch

I'd rather they watch these on DVD than any new so called kid sitcoms .

Oh! Almost forgot Popular Mechanics for Kids and the Smithsonian Networks Kids DVDs. Also Doktor Kaboom. All of these can be found at our library and are much enjoyed by both my guys.

On another subject, ds9 and I watched the first episode of Season 1 of Mythbusters this afternoon, and I was very taken by surprise to see a scene where they visit a sex shop to obtain latex suits needed for an experiment. Fortunately it went right over my son's head as I scrambled for the remote - I did NOT want to answer the "Mommy, what is a sex shop?" question - but wanted to give a heads up that previewing may be wise.

Oh dear! I haven't seen that one, but yes....should have mentioned that there is some adult humor and content in Mythbusters. I don't have a problem with my big kids watching, but my littles don't watch unless an adult or teen is in the room with the remote. And of course previewing is best if you have concerns!

This totally happened to me today, too. My 13yo shot me quite a glance while it went over the rest of the kids' heads, thank God    You aren't alone...
Now back to Veggie Tales, TinTin, Liberty's Kids, Mr. Wizard, Blue Planet, Signing Time, and Blue's Clues...until I recover

God bless,
Christine

Mr. Wizard!!!! A childhood favorite!!!

We watched a program similar to Blue Planet about the Arctic/Antarctic, and it was excellent. I can't recall the name, but if you are Blue Planet fans, you will like this, too.

My dd is a huge fan of Shark Week, which happens once a year on Discovery Channel, typically in July. She is very fussy about her shark shows ("Mom!!! River Monsters says river rays have denticles like sharks, but they are different!!"), so her vote of confidence is a big deal.

We love Shark Week here, too. Last year my ds had a long, detailed conversation about it with a total stranger he met fishing at the park .

Slim Goodbody

If you can get ahold of any of the Slim Goodbody dvds, they are great. We saw him live last fall. His show was wonderful- very funny and kid-friendly. He had a great segment about not smoking. The kids still sing his songs, such as this gem about the diaphragm:

Up and Down,
Here I am
Up and Down
I'm your diaphragm.

Here is another link to his bodyology CD:
Bodyology Songs

If you scroll to the bottom of th page, you can listen to clips from some of the songs.

He also does a series of math cds that look like they could be a lot of fun.

Muzzy - Immersion style foreign language. Pricy but well-worth it, I think. Sometimes you can find it used.

March of the Penguins - available streaming instantly on Netflix.

Microcosmos - we could watch this over and over! Also available streaming instantly on Netflix..

Jenn - for travel Netflix has apps for iPad and iPhone. For at home (or grandma's house) you can use a Roku player or Wii to wirelessly transmit to your TV. Older versions of the Roku can be found used.

Disney Science of Imagineering

My library has this series, and we are enjoying it. We just watched one about how some of the rides at Animal Kingdom were designed, and it walks you through all the steps of solving a problem:

Identifying a need
brainstorming solutions
building a scale model
etc

It was really very fascinating and a good look into the creative/scientific thought process. Neat to see behind the scenes, too. Looking forward to more in the series

[QUOTE=Mackfam]
The Adventures of Tin Tin (3 seasons) - follow the first three books in the series closely. Well done.
/QUOTE]

Just a heads up on Tin Tin - we rented it, and the 1st episode was about a boat carrying illegal drugs and involved a man with alcohol addiction. It's not subtle about those things at all, and my children were pretty uncomfortable until I turned it off after a few minutes. Also, there is a good amount of violence, for families trying to avoid that in their viewing. Every family is different, I know, but I just wanted to give a little warning.

My older kids loved the Bell Lab science dvds. They are sometimes a little outdated, but they are interesting and cover subjects not often covered elsewhere.

In Christ,
Deborah

We have been enjoying Little House on the Prarie and The Waltons. WARNINGS on these shows and watch them first if you haven't seen them in awhile. I would think 10 and up on the age. They do cover tough topics, but it is nicely done. Their is a lot of death in Little House so I wouldn't let a sensitive child watch those. I let my almost 8 year old son watch these, but he isn't old enough to really understand some of the issues going on and I have had to turn it off on one of the Little House episodes (there is one that deals with rape of a young girl). My 11 year old understands some and ask questions when he doesn't and I usually relate the problem to our modern day. The Waltons is really a great historical fiction and the boys get a great look at living in America during WWII. That is my all time favorite tv show (along with Home Improvement which we all enjoy at this house). The acting isn't the best, but we over look that as the stories are good.

I just discovered that the excellent author/illustrator David Macaulay did some documentaries that you can watch in their entirety on Youtube:

Just type his name in and you'll find Castle, Cathedral, Pyramid, Roman City and Mill Times!

Superb resources!

This was a great post to read through! I LOVE Reading Rainbow and did not know there were free episodes online! I'll definitely have to check them out! We also like to watch PBS Design Squad as a great engineering show for kids. We watch online at PBS kids GO.

I was really disappointed with the agenda Bill Nye was pushing on an episode I happend to watch while staying at a hotel a couple of years ago. He was giving the whole, "the world is overpopulated" spiel. It really turned me off. We hear that enough when going out in public! :)
