Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I selected 'mostly' as I was thinking of our consumerable maths workbooks but... if I absolutely had to I could manage without them too. The beauty of hsing for so many years means we have so many resources.

I'm with Erin. Actually, I enjoy curriculum shopping so much I should have put the last one. But, when money's tight, I know I really don't NEED anything.

How fun! I love curriculum shopping!

This is my second year of hs so my rising 1st grader will use what my first child had in 1st grade - with a bit of additional purchases (a couple of workbooks).

My oldest is rising to 3rd grade, so I'll be purchasing all of her curriculum but with the knowledge that it will be passed down through three other kids (mostly). My shopping goal this year is to focus on non-consumable books and if consumable, make them non by using notebooks for answers.

My oldest will be a 2nd grader, so we will need everything.

My next two will be kindergarten and preschool. I mostly will use what we have and library books, but will need to refresh a lot of art supplies, computer paper and just a few work books (these two are really into the workbook thing, so I will be buying a few all inclusive type workbooks for them to use while I work with my oldest)

I am a huge book person, I don't think I could make it through a year without purchasing any.... If the budget were really tight I would probably stick to making garage sale and book sale finds work.

I am not a huge "curriculum" person though... I will be using math and phonics programs and a few good textbooks (like Faith and Life) but I don't buy a lot of lesson plan type things, or boxed curriculum.

I could if I needed to. Honestly, I won't be purchasing much, but there are a few things I want to get.

But if money was truly so tight that we could not afford anything, I could make adjustments and do it without any new purchases for sure.

Well, I voted absolutely, but I'm sure I'll end up purchasing some "extras" with our yearly homeschool budget. I figure the "tail end gang" deserves a few fresh, exciting new books and materials, like their older siblings were blessed to look forward to each year! Besides, what would we do without our long awaited visits from UPS? If circumstances made it absolutely impossible to purchase any new items, our accumulatiion from 20+ years would certainly suffice, for which we are profoundly grateful. Most of our books have truly stood the test of time. In fact, we are blessed to be passing materials down to our family's next generation of homeschoolers!

Totally could, but I still am hanging on to my CHC workbooks.    They are really worth the small expense for us here, but now that I am adding 2 more children to the mix this fall, they are starting to add up! Oh, yeah and math workbooks, too - we buy those.

As for all the other stuff, God always sends along what we need at the right time. The other day, I hit a rummage sale and came across 5 volumes from "A Picturesque Tale of Progress", for 20 cents a piece! I have been drooling over these for a couple years, and there they were! Seemingly random, but I have to wonder...

We don't have LOADS of stuff in the house, but we sure do have enough, and it would be kind of fun to base a year or two on what is one the shelves. Kind of like a pantry clean out when the grocery budget is tight! You have more than you think and end up making new dishes you've never tried before!

As far as saving money... any money that I would save by not buying more stuff I would just want to use to buy more living books.... kind of a like the old hamster on the wheel

Asolutely, but won't.
over the years (and children) I've managed to accumulate the entire set of: Saxon math, Apologia Science, Voyages in English (yes the old, catholic ones) and Faith and Life Religion - a bunch of other stuff too, but it isn't coming to mind. Makes the initial planning phase of each year a lot easier, I must say.

I have purchased the newer Saxon workbooks the past couple years. Honestly, how many times do I have to write out the Saxon 54 book???

I love buying school supplies, but the past two years the kids and I walked through the school supply aisles with little interest - we already have a huge stack of paper, spirals, compbooks bought at previous years sales. We just didn't NEED anything. They didn't even want a new binder or anything. I did discover this past year that amassing pens on sale for many future years is pointless. They go bad/dry up/ something. I threw away dozens and dozens of them this year. We'd opened a 'new' pack from our stock and .....nothing, dry pen. We started going through them all, and I will be buying pens when they go on sale this year But, I will resist the urge to get $5.00 worth when they are .10 per/dozen pack if I ever run across it again!

I do purchase some workbooks every year.
But,nah... I wouldn't HAVE to purchase a thing.

Maybe for some kids, but I would need higher math at least -- my oldest is 15. I didn't vote for that option, though... I voted for "What, no school supplies?!"

I'm such a geek. But I love buying new art supplies and notebooks and pencils... etc. every year.

If I absolutely had to, I could...but it would require a lot more work and planning...digging up all of those free online and library resources. And I'd have to be willing to give up using the next level of Singapore Math for my oldest (I already have the text book and extra workbooks for all previous levels).

But what would the fun in that be? When I get that big delivery of homeschool books twice each year it's like Christmas FOR ME!!

I do try to think long-term, though, and pick a lot of curriculum that can be reused from kid to kid to keep our costs down.

I have plenty of history and science and English/lit, in fact I didn't buy any of that this year.

But our phonics, math, penmanship/spelling and grammar(if we did a separate formal program that year) are usually consumables that I'm very comfortable and consistent with using. It would have to be really bad for me to ditch the math and begining reading programs that's worked great for 12 years.

Also high school foreign languages, ACT testing fees, extracurriculiars.... I don't see any of those being free and that's a solid grand per high schooler right there.
