Wow, what an awesome cake! We had a great pentecost and used many of the ideas here. I had each of my 5 older children involved in doing a part. 1 did the food, 1 did the decorations, 1 did a game, and my 2 little girls did a song and activity.

Janette,
The cake is absolutely beautiful (and looks yummy, too ). We just had a plain ice cream "birthday" cake - will have to look into this mold for next year.

That's the best thing about it -- it was so EASY (well, if we ignore the actual making of the marzipan and the HUGE mess I made of the kitchen, rolling pin, spatulas, bowls, etc in my 5 failed attempts ). Next year really will be easy, though, because I'll use PAM from the start.
And they have a beautiful mold of Mary that would be perfect for the Assumption, and nice Nativity molds too... Ah, the wish list is long. And the molds double as decorations. I have them on the wall above what we used as our Mary Altar this year.
Lisa, I love that all your kids got involved. Yesterday was actually a low energy day for me, so all we did was have cake. Next year I hope to do more with the kids.

Well, after much trial and error I finally managed to get a "good" print with homemade marzipan. I didn't even think to take a picture, so Tim took it after we cut into the cake. |

After all that work and you didn't think of it as a Kodak moment! I'm glad Tim did! It's beautiful and inspiring!

FYI, I don't know if it was user error (probably!) but things did not work out at all when the mold was dusted with powedered sugar or flour. The marzipan clung to the mold for dear life and I ended up with white blotches on what would come out. What finally worked was spraying a light coat of cooking spray on the mold. I am not a fan of cooking spray, but will definitely use it again for this! |

I feel responsible for all your pain and suffering. Why you ask? My sister used these molds for my wedding cookies (speculaas) and saw this thread and instructed me to tell you that you should spray the molds with cooking spray...that's what worked for her. And did I? Noooo...So I'm sorry you went through through all that. I could have saved you some time!

Jenn, how could you! (How could you not, that is.) Well, no pain, no gain, right? This way I'll NEVER forget the lesson!

Janette,
It turned out beautifully! I probably would have given up in frustration! Will you make your own marzipan again? Do you know if hm marzipan is much better than store bought?

Would I make my own marzipan again? Yes, but it was a real learning experience too! I don't know how it compares to store bought. I've had marzipan on cakes before, but don't know if it was homemade or not. Lesson learned in marzipan making: don't tweak the recipe until you're absolutely sure you need to! Corollary: You can't be absolutely sure until the mixture cools completely. I started tweaking too early, and then had to "fix" it because my tweaking ruined it. In the end it turned out fine, but again, it'll be easier the second time round! I did substitute almond extract for almond oil, because I couldn't find the oil in the store.

Janette,
I bought Sweet Almond Oil a few months ago for a homemade lip balm recipe. I had to get it at the health food store. I bet that made a difference in the consistency.

Janette, the cake came out lovely! I recently ordered two small molds from House on the Hill, but so far haven't done a thing with them. You have inspired me!
