Just saw this app review and thought it looked interesting. Sort of the virtual tray of cornmeal for preschoolers.

Letter School is great for reinforcing letters! We start out with the "Sand Paper" letters app, but once that got old, Letter School came to the rescue!

Holy cannoli, I just bought the Star Chart app and it was the best $2.99 I've spent in a long time... No more fumbling with a flashlight and field guide! What a superb innovation! Dh has been trying to get me to fall in love with the iPad (I call it the iSad, because I'm such a curmudgeon to technological dependencies...) and this just boosted my esteem of it quite a bit.

I have starchart too, it is neat, but it doesn't have the Big Dipper on it..lol. I can find it but it isn't marked...am I losing my mind?

DD8 science text uses the big dipper to find the north star. It wasn't included in the indexes for Star Chart. I just showed her how to find it, and showed her the formation of the big dipper.

My husband recently sent me links to an app and an iBook that look fascinating and I wanted to share them with you all.
The ibook is Cleaning Mona Lisa - more info and a review
The app is a WWII Timeline app with what looks like amazing photos, maps, and other information. It seems like it could be a wonderful supplement to a high schooler's WWII studies. Here's a review.

The Peterson Birds of North America app is currently $.99 (instead of $14.99). You can hear bird songs, keep a personal list of your bird sightings, see lists of birds spotted in your county by season...and more. Looks like fun!

Would anyone be interested in having our kids do some Skype time on the iPad? My almost 10 yr. old boy would love to maybe do a book club or just chat with some other like minded Catholic kids.

Wanted to add another ipad app that is fabulous!
DodgePoint Software offers 12 of Shakespeare's plays (in full) in "radio theatre" audio production. Each play is read aloud, with different voices for different characters, along with accompanying period music and some sound effects. The text is written out, line by line, with helpful in-line definitions of words. You can read along with the actors reading aloud.
In the "margin" there are explanations of the setting of the play. Each play is divided into acts and scenes for the recordings, so it's easy to see how it could divide up easily in your term. For example, Romeo and Juliet has 26 distinct scenes recorded. In addition to the text of the play and the reading aloud of it, there is a good overview of the play with themes, character profiles and scene index, a character listing, and a really neat summary timeline of the play. The app is pretty intuitive and easy to navigate.
This app costs .99 per play, really a bargain considering you get the entire play, read aloud, with context information, definitions, explanations. The reading is VERY well done and enjoyable. The app works on ipad and iphone.
Benefits of this app:
** Shakespeare is best when it is *experienced*. If you can't get to a performance of a play, this is a really great second-best! The play is read with great expression and clear enunciation, familiarizing the student with Shakespeare's vocabulary. They simultaneously hear the play being read, while reading along on their e-device.
** This could be a really great app for a slow-to-read student, or a dyslexic student that benefits from audio versions of good literature.
** Great for auditory learners, but also wonderful for visual learners - they stretch their auditory attention skills while also having the text in front of them to read along with.
I highly recommend this app!

My kids have been having a great time with imovie and imotion.
In imovie, they have made some fabulous and fun "trailers."
Imotion makes stop-motion animation relatively easy. My 12 and 9 year olds and neighborhood friends have gone to town with this, using clay, legos, drawings, etc. Lots of fun.
For stop motion animation inspiration:
-claymation made by a highschooler:beaver creek
-music video made from 288,000 jelly beans: jellybeanvideo
-the making of the jelly bean video: making of
-st.patrick story told with lego people: st.patrick

We've been using the I See Sam readers for years, mostly because they were well liked by my boys and free!
However, we just downloaded the I See Sam iPad app, and we really like it. It is still more affordable than buying a set of print readers (each level set of 27 readers is 7.99) , and the app is fully interactive. You can turn off the features if they aren't helpful, but so far we Iike how you can see if you read the word correctly by pushing it and having it sounded out properly. You can also have the child record himself reading the book. All the sounds and words in the reader are reviewed before they start reading.
I must admit, I really don't enjoy this stage of teaching reading at all, so anything that helps them practice independently is a plus for me

Amazing suggestions! I will have to download some of these. I already have some, but I'm always looking for more! I might have skipped it, but does anyone have any ASL app suggestions? We have one, but the kids would like another. :)
