Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Where have I been? I follow all sorts of CM blogs, but obviously November and December must have been a blur, because I missed this debut.

Adding it to my list, although book buying is at a bare minimum these days. Looking forward to your discussions to whet my appetite.

I got it a couple weeks ago but haven't had a chance to get beyond the first chapter yet (not because it isn't excellent so far--just because I've been busy ;) ). Most of the CM blogs I read are abuzz with this book, as is the AO forums. I'm really looking forward to reading it.

I haven't heard about this new book either. I was just thinking that I needed something homeschooly to read for inspiration! Maybe this is the one :)

I just got in the mail yesterday a copy of The Living Page Keeping Notebooks with Charlotte Mason by Laurie Bestvater (you can also purchase on her site) I'm so excited! I've read through the preface and on my way through Ch1. It is not a how to of CM but talks specifically about 'notebooks' and their place in a CM education.

Any one else had a chance to look at this book? or Plan on adding to their reading list?
Would love to discuss it

I'm reading it, Jenny. I got it for Christmas.

Book club? Seriously, someone should host a book club about it, here or on their blog. How nice of me to suggest it. I would but I still can't get an active blog going! I have posts, but never have made it public.

Brandy at Afterthoughts is reading it, too, or finished. I wonder if she'll do one. I have about 20 books in my to be read or started pile, mostly classical ed Kreeft, and a few of CM's volumes. So I keep starting this one - I need motivation!

I would love a review! I have several books on my wish list and they have me over budget (as usual!). Is this one worth it?

I'm curious if it veers much from our discussions here, or does it illuminates further the thoughts here.

I'm so excited some of you ladies are reading it too. And how very nice of you Jen! Can't wait to chat about it...

I've been wanting to get a CM notebook just for me...a place to put quotes from her work and others about CM. I just picked one and started to put some quotes from this particular book. I'm sure it sounds like something that I should have been doing already, but instead my books, thus far, are simply highlighted/underlined. I have been wanting a separate notebook to record the best and most inspiring CM to me Better a late start than no start

Oh good, Jenn! I can't tell you how much I've learned from reading this book - and so much that's in the practical realm so you can put it to work right away.

I just finished reading the section on the different history notebooks a couple of nights ago and was so inspired to generate some of these *charts* for my kids to work with (a few different charts/notebooks fit different kids/ages so well and since we're right between terms introducing the chart is ideal in terms of timing).

And...I have to say...after reading Bestvater's excellent explanation on ALL of the history notebooks, and the Book of Centuries in particular, I really find Bestvater's explanation of its form and purpose (within the CM sources, context and framework she's able to provide) to be so much clearer and really solid in my mind now. And I find I do see the reasoning and purpose for the very particular form of that notebook. I'll have to decide what I do from here now that I feel that way!

...but I'm getting ahead of myself...

Glad you have a copy - I think you'll really enjoy it, Jenn! Looking forward to your thoughts.

I have completed my first read through of the book and really enjoyed it! Now I'll go through again and take notes. My computer time is really limited lately so I'm disappointed that I'm not able to join the discussion at your blog, Jen. I've grabbed a little time to read the discussions though. Thank you for hosting that!
Can I ask when you all fit notebooking into your days? I find time for myself in the early morning so I'm mostly wondering about how to plan it into my kid's days. Right now I'm asking them for narrations as they complete a subject. So it's pretty simple: read history, then write or do an oral narration for me. This method, unfortunately hasn't ever worked very well for us. Just when one child wants to narrate (orally) for me, I'm helping another child with their math.
Any help with logistics?

I can't wait until I get my book! It will be my treat for filing taxes and college financial aid applications.

The Book of Centuries Thread reminded me of a question I wanted to ask. Please would you share what notebooks you use - especially for Commonplace Books. DD and I have been using the $5 lined ones from Michaels (similar to this one and some from CBD - from this section We love pretty notebooks. Dd makes a hobby of collecting them(and filling them!)

This brings me to another question - what notebooks do you buy for your sons? I am trying to encourage my 9th graders to do more "personal notebooks" like a Commonplace Book.

Thanks so much!

How exciting! Like a little mini-conference in a book! And do jump in with your comments if you get a chance, Marilyn! I'd love your take on things!

Well...thanks to you, I can excitedly answer!

History - Book of Centuries
Fusion Sketch Book - 9 x 12. This is a change for us (the Bestvater research and explanation of the BOC from her book - within the context of the other history tools used in CM schools was the catalyst for me to make this change. I really considered carefully making this change. I'm content with it and eager to get started). My oldest finished her BOC this year. We enjoyed going through her work. It was delightful. My current 8th grader is halfway through a similar book. After reading the Bestvater book, considering the format, and talking with my son (who prefers something a bit more streamlined anyway), we're going to move some of his work over to the Fusion book that will be formatted as the CM Book of Centuries were. My 3rd son is in 4th grade this year, and he'll start his BOC this upcoming term. He'll start fresh in the Fusion.

Nature Sketch Books
Field Sketch Book in 8" x 8" - I am thrilled to have found the 8 x 8 square size. My lefty will be able to choose to have the binding up top! We used a different brand that was discontinued and everyone is about 2 pages away from finishing...so I had to quickly research to find a new brand of Nature Sketch book, too. It's been notebooking-themed-research here for a few months! Which could explain why I'm nearly gushing! I've looked, considered, compared and your help was the last piece of the puzzle so I've got my decisions made and order in...all set to arrive before we begin our final spring term of work in a couple of weeks!

Copybooks
I use a combination of Notebooking Pages and various journals. My boys prefer these engineering and science notebooks which they also use as their...science notebooks. Also enjoyed at times are the Bienfang Notesketch books in various sizes.

Commonplace Books
For my older teen daughter and my teen son, hands down, their preference are the lined Moleskine notebooks. They prefer the notebooks with the small pocket in the back cover...for storing treasures like concert tickets, etc. You might see if your boys like them, Marilyn. You can usually find them almost EVERYWHERE in a variety of sizes. My kids like the flexible covers. *I* prefer covers that are a bit "floofier" and prettier...so I often have floral covered notebooks. Right now, I'm on a Martha Stewart kick - I just LOVE, LOVE the lined journals in Robin's Egg Blue, of course!

We do keep various other notebooks at different times, and so I keep a small supply of Moleskines and simple journals on hand for those. I always keep the engineering notebooks in supply here. Boys work through those quickly! Everyone here prefers a lined journal so that's what we keep on hand.

Eager to hear what y'all use...and gather any new ideas!!

I'm so glad you decided to do this Jen! And Jenn, I know you'll love it. I'm in the middle of the chapter on forms and am really enjoying it. Of course, my reading is in fits and starts right now with a 5 week old and 5 older kiddos needing my attention as well- its been a little nuts.

Jen, sorry that I haven't added to the discussion. I finished Ch. 1 a few days after your post on that section. I wanted to comment, or make my blog public, but there just hasn't been time! But I am enjoying the discussion! :)

I forgot to add...

Book of Firsts
We use the Red Mountain School Book of Firsts. It's quite lovely, and the paper is very nice! But, I got it before I knew about Betsy's beautiful Book of Firsts, which she graciously shares (freely) on her beautiful website, Immaculata Designs: on the resources page. I love Betsy's Book of Firsts because it's beautiful in its simplicity, and Catholic! In particular, I so appreciate the way Betsy has adorned each monthly page with a flower connected to Our Lady. I wanted to make sure her Book of Firsts is here as a resource. It's a lovely way to begin this particular notebook! And Betsy is so gracious in sharing it for free - thank you, Betsy!
