We are doing it as a family. I don't see us joining together with other families just because of our location (only Catholic homeschooling family in our small town-everyone is one town over).

We have been using this program for 5 weeks now and we are getting ready to start week 3. It seems we need to spend about two weeks on each week of work, but they aren't memorizing much of it. It really isn't going too smoothly. My boys don't like it and they tell me they can't memorize the stuff. I try to encourage and when they do get stuff memorized I praise them.
I think my biggest issue is the fact that it seems senseless to memorize stuff outside of context. It becomes boring for all of us. I love the idea of this program but I guess it just not our style. I do think my boys need to work better on memorizing stuff. I'm tempting to come up with something that goes along exactly with what we are learning in our subjects. I do love the geography, Latin, and Great Words! |

I'm doing it as a family with 4 of my kids. The oldest four are too old for this, the youngest 2 are too young.
How are you using it on a daily basis? I think if all you do is read it and recite it, that will certainly get very dry.
I do over it all every day with all of them and each day I also focus on one area in more depth.
For example, for history I will tie it in to the previous weeks' memory work and how it connects to this weeks memory, so it is not out of context. For the poems, we might make hand motions to go with it or act it out in some other way. Or maybe I'll pull an art lesson to go with it.
I also give incentives. We have a treasure box full of cheap $1 type stuff. And each week I add the new topics to the draw bag so that by the end of the year, they might draw anything from week 1 thru week 18. It keeps previous weeks from being forgotten.
I insist they illustrate the copybooks they have copied their memory work into. It helps greatly to have a visual associated with the memory work.
We listen to the CD in the van every time we leave the house for more than a few minutes. I can't stand the singing on it, but the kids seem okay with it.
I will drill in rounds for a change of pace. For example kid one has to say the first phrase, then kid two says the next part and so forth.
I shuffle the cards and the race to see how fast they can get the timeline in order.
And lastly, memory work is not always going to be fun, just like any other work. The first couple of months last year, my kids struggled with it greatly, but we stuck it out and they slowly progressed in proficiency.
CCM might not be for you. Idk. But maybe these ideas will help.

Maybe you would enjoy Living Memory more. You can pick and choose the facts you want to memorize and add them to your normal routine.

A lot of what Martha said.
We have just started CCM - and I love it because I just needed to have the memory work set out for me. Now it is not as great as if I did my own using Living Memory or other - but right now is not the season that I could spend the whole summer figuring out memory work. So I like it ready prepared. We chose Alpha to match our history. Science does not match as we are doing Chemistry this year - but I just do the memory work and some explanation for the life science without any additional activities. I feel the kids will be at an advantage when we do Biology next year.
I love CCM too - because it covers a lot and with Math and Language Arts, is good enough for days when there is illness etc.
I use CCM with 3 children - 4, 6 and 9. I add in some harder Math memory work for the 9 year old. I also use the CCM to add in memorization of prayers etc. My 9 year old also does his regular Latin recitations at this time. I draw recitation ideas from the Memoria Press curricula too, and just tag this onto CCM.
I think CCM is good at getting children used to memorizing and recitation.
My high schoolers just did the Kolbe Classics conference - and I feel very motivated about memorization and recitation, after listening to this.
I prefer to do it within our family - am not really into coops esp. for the elementary years.
The kids love to recite to their Dad on Fridays. I also have incentives - points for gift cards to Sweet Frog yogurt or Chick Fil A (got to support those Christian businesses!!!)

My kids are surprised at how much they can remember
I'm having my high schooler memorize the timeline & Latin.
I think they all feel like smarty-pantsies now!

Just wanted to pop in and mention that the book Memorize the Faith is an excellent resource for CCM teachers (or any catechists). I'm using it this year to help the kids in our co-op remember the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit.
