Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been reading and praying, dear, with soooooooooooo much empathy. Mothering college-aged students is crazy hard!!!!!!!!

With permission from my dd, I'll share that she floundered in her first semester at a large university this past fall, and this was after doing amazingly well at the local community college. The tricky part for us has been to discern where normal, expected, floundering ends and "we need to change courses completely" begins. We determined together that she made some poor decisions connected to her character weaknesses that led to natural consequences of not doing well academically. She floundered because she shot herself in the foot - OUCH! This is the painful and responsible truth. Under these circumstances it felt important for us to come up with a plan for her to make amends for those poor choices and to tackle her character weaknesses head on. The best setting for her was to go back to the monster that chewed her up and spit her out in the first place.

Growing up is hard, hard, work. The key for us has been to focus on answering 2 questions, "What is the state of your soul right now?" and "Are you willing to suffer to gain a college degree?" Praise God that some of my dd's weaknesses are being revealed to her at this tender age and that we're able to support her as she answers these questions for herself.

As her mom, I'm floundering too! My goodness, I pray that I'm doing right by her and by God. There have been moments of sheer shock combined with that horrific feeling of having no influence or ability to help . I don't know who is being tested to trust in the Lord more, my dd or myself.

Chocolate anyone?

Love,
