Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Jodie...you're right that he can be doing something else and still listening so I usu. make sure he has SOMETHING in his hands when I'm reading a book. My only "demand" is NO NOISES. LOL Amazingly tho sometimes he can totally get engrossed in a book I'm reading aloud and really focus on the pictures, my face and words b/c I really try and change my voice and inflectoins etc. I must be a really good read a-louder.

I think I'm going to get out some of those Dover coloring books I purchased as well to use as a time filler. He would never pick up something to color on his own but if I put it in front of him, he actually will do it. May be that's part of the problem is that he has a really hard time narrowing down and focusing on what he needs to do. Again, I guess it's just that much harder (time consuming) for me to make sure he has something of interest to occupy his time wisely but I think that's where a "go to" list will come in handy.

I do buy my neighbor gift cards on occasion and try to buy her treats here and there as "pay back" b/c she would never let me pay her. I've tried on several occasions. I just try to be extra generous at birthday, holidays etc.

Something that really helped me out when I was homeschooling my youngest sister - figure out her distinct learning style. For the first several months we catered specifically to that style only and she gained enough confidence, we were able to sneak subjects that weren't easy to adapt to her style one at time in tiny increments and she ended up going back to school *ahead* of her peers, where she was drastically behind before.

She has been diagnosed with emotional disabilities which affect a whole slew of learning capacities.

But perhaps take 2-3 months to cater to his style to build confidence. If you don't have confidence, plowing ahead in areas you feel like you stink at can become what feels like a huge waste of time. You've got to have some success somewhere and sometime to keep up the faith that it WILL come out good in the end :)
